@philplait.bsky.social was a massive help in figuring out my tidally locked planet comma along with a few other physicists I believe it is possible to be totally locked and have a slightly wobbly orbit, but any errors are mine alone

I saw you mentioned Phil Plait (The Bad Astronomer) in the thanks, did he give any scientific advice? I didn’t think a tidal-locked “eyeball” planet could have an eccentric orbit. Did that turn out to be possible? (Not that Trek is particularly realistic anyway!) I really liked it!

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.

many centrists are as disdainful of science as MAGA these days. virtually every study on the topic, and there have been many, show that youth programs reduce crime. it's a settled question. this is no different from claiming vaccines are a hoax.
