Britain's biggest insurance company has stated that climate change will make houses near flood-risk areas uninsurable in the future. This will have dire consequences for many. We need urgent climate action, and we need it now to ensure a brighter and sustainable future for Britain.

Bucks Council has launched a six-week public consultation on its draft Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy. The council is asking for residents and those with lived experience to contribute and help shape the strategy. Feel free to have a say. www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/2655775...

Bucks residents asked to help shape homelessness and rough sleeping strategy

People are being asked to help shape a five-year strategy to prevent homelessness and rough sleeping.

This is very much welcomed. Public transport is a necessity that should work for and be accountable for the public, not private shareholders. We do urge the government, however, that Chiltern Railways and other services receive the funding necessary to meet the needs of those who rely on them.

No amount of fudge can make airport expansion compatible with our climate commitments. It is disgraceful to see this government twist its own promises into knots simply to try to make bigger profits for the bosses of one private company in spite of the ever-growing costs of climate breakdown.

Water company profits are soaring as raw sewage is being pumped into our waters. The government must bring all water companies back into public ownership: end the unlawful dumping of sewage, and ensure profits are being reinvested back into fixing leaks and building new infrastructure.

The government wants to build more data centres despite not knowing what they are being used for. The country has just got out of one of the driest summers on record, with the coming years likely to be worse. We desperately need better water security; we need to put people ahead of data centres.

Andy Burnham is suddenly doing this because @zackpolanski.bsky.social forced the conversation with the climate press conference nobody covered. Before that happened Andy B was talking about drilling for oil. @greenparty.org.uk pushing the dialogue back on track 🙌🏽 www.bbc.com/weather/arti...

UK weather: Burnham to chair Cobra meeting on extreme heat as temperatures surge again

The Government will meet to discuss this summer's record-breaking heat as the tally for days above 30C in the UK is broken.

Buckinghamshire has been declared to be in a drought following an exceptionally hot and dry summer. From hosepipe bans to record temperatures, the climate crisis is already having devastating impacts on our communities, and it will only get worse if we refuse to speed up our climate commitments.

Cutting payments and tightening access to social security doesn't help people get into work. It only increases poverty and worsens mental health. Instead, we could raise much more by progressively reforming the tax system and closing tax loopholes. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Andy Burnham wants to cut the benefits bill – these are his main options

The new prime minister says Britain has to be ‘really serious’ about reducing the benefits bill

Up to 13m people in the UK face long-term coastal flooding risks due to the climate crisis. Coastal communities set to be hit the hardest, which may cause many to be relocated for their safety. Climate breakdown is a serious security threat; we must abstain from policies that could worsen it.

New drilling isn't just a catastrophic signal of us stepping back from our climate commitments, it also runs against the geological reality of an almost depleted resource. Our focus should be on cheap, clean fuel for the future - not propping up oil and gas. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Burnham to Back North Sea Oil and Take Control of Thames Water

Within days of taking office incoming prime minister Andy Burnham is preparing to announce new drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea as well as taking public control of Thames Water.

Abolish the House of Lords; this undemocratic chamber is only being used to reward unelected officials and close friends of the Prime Minister with a safe seat in Parliament. In a time of political uncertainty, we should be strengthening our democracy, not doing this.

I know people who clung onto the Labour Party in the slim chance that after Keir Starmer things might have been different. Labour consistently revealing there's absolutely no plan for change. The puurpose is to maintain power & wealth for the super rich. Join.greenparty.org.uk

This is an uplifting *good news* global project I've been following since its public launch a few months ago. Co-founded by UK Guardian journalist and environment campaigner @georgemonbiot.bsky.social, it will appeal to some of you good people here on W Social. Significant soil science solutions.

Never before has a politician announced their intention to run for re-election on an explicitly pro-sleaze, anti-transparency ticket. Never before has a politician gloried in having enriched themselves by breaking the rules, and then demanded a mandate to continue doing so indefinitely

Nigel Farage’s 'Pro-Sleaze' By-Election Is A Sign Of Terminal Weakness

The Reform leader's desperate decision to call a back-me-or-sack-me by-election is a sign of a politician who knows he is finally being exposed for the man he really is, argues Adam Bienkov
