"It would be the honour of my life to c̶o̶n̶q̶u̶e̶r̶ represent you." Hot off the press from Weeley Bin HQ (Weeley is a weel place in the Clacton constituency)

Cory Doctorow: Forget "Don't be evil"; Google's true motto is a form of vulgar spidermanism: "With great power comes no responsibility." The internet's *de facto* boss is an absentee landlord. + Which jobs can be replaced with AI? + $300 Million Button: making customers create logins + much more…

In this analogy, the wax bean is the Ai industry, the cat is the fatastrophy of finance, and the warnings from Cory @doctorow.pluralistic.net are still being ignored.
Sorry, I didn’t take a video but here he is with a bit of wax bean earlier. Guest starring @doctorow.pluralistic.net.
Thanks for letting us know, Steve. I don't know what we'd do without experts like you.
If someone wastes your time, time is shared by all of us, so they wasted everybody's time. *this post has been certified a self-referential autological tautology
Must-read essential level insight from Cory @doctorow.pluralistic.net for @thenerve.news: 'This has created a situation in which everyone – "boards, executives, employees, vendors, consultants" – has a strong incentive to lie about how much AI is delivering for their companies.'
Cory Doctorow: The people who tell you ‘AI is changing everything’ are lying
It has become impossible to tell managers mesmerised by artificial intelligence that the tools are not, in fact, helpful. So employees just play along with the fiction to keep their jobs, writes our t...

This isn't thread of the day. This is thread of the year. When you can, take some time out and read the whole thing. Thank you, Graeme Swanson and everyone who has added their hilarious descriptions.
What’s your favourite description of a famous person? I like Alan Partridge on Gary Barlow who described him as a “Wide hipped wealth enthusiast”
"Where did you hear sugar will make you addicted to it, eat more, put on weight, rot your teeth and eventually kill you? Nonsense! It's the healthiest thing in the world! So healthy, we're going to heap it into everything and call it diet food."

"It's fine, Sir. The first seven slowly squished their occupants to a pulp, but we're pretty sure number 8 will hold." "Ooh, Tom, should that crack be there?" "Okay, so there are a thousand reasons we can think of to give you this suicide pill, but mostly it's for the reasons we can't think of."

Nice helmet. For a couple of thousand years old. How about 6000 years old and crafted in gold? Varna Necropolis, Bulgaria (Варненски некропол) - the oldest gold treasure and jewellery in the world, dating from 4600 BC to 4200 BC. Stunning, intricate Thracian artefacts in mind-blowing condition.

My mom and grandma told me about this. It happened in Los Angeles. The last streetcar ran in 1963.
Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

"If you have been reading about the latest AI advances in (or on) maths, this is essential reading. And you don't need to be a mathematician to feel deeply moved by it." kirwinhampshire.substack.com/p/the-dark-n...
Not just another AI movie. An autonomous delivery robot drove off the end of a pier in San Diego and quickly sank. The company called it an isolated navigation error. Was this the first example of AI committing suicide due to workplace stress? No, it was pier pressure.
My top choice show in existence I'd most like to see.
Just For One Day, the Live Aid Musical will be touring the UK early next year. Check this schedule to see if it is coming to a town near you - if not I will personally arrange for Bob Geldof to come round to your house and swear at you in your front room. theliveaidmusical.com
Don't get it wet, don't feed it after midnight, and don't cross the streams.
