When people talk about “rare” books, my mind goes to those works published by small boutique presses that may have only had a short life and published on narrow topics that lacks broad appeal. I can think of several now-defunct presses that specialized on the ACW whose output is hard to locate.

One pet peeve I have long had with many milhist buffs is their obsessive focus on battles and tactics—to include esoteric unit information—to the exclusion of broader themes, namely the social disruption of war and the lasting effects thereof. War seems to be a tabletop exercise for them.

I had a long conversation with an old buddy last night about travel ball and the effects it has had on rec leagues. This isn’t a judgement on those who choose travel ball, but rec leagues are shrinking or disappearing in some areas. Part of it is the talent drain among players, but coaches too.
