I oppose the closing of the National Archives facility in Chicago. The lack of transparency surrounding this decision has only deepened the loss it would represent for researchers, historians, dedicated employees, and our community. I urge the National Archives to reconsider this decision.
Rep. Chuy García

Progressive Chicagoan. Congressman for #IL04. FB/IG:@RepChuyGarcia
On the 61st anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, I joined my brothers and sisters in calling on Congress to protect and strengthen these vital programs, while continuing the fight for a universal health care system that guarantees quality, affordable care for everyone.
Innocent children are being locked away and traumatized at the Dilley Trailer Prison. They are fed food with worms and mold, drinking water that makes them sick, and being denied medical care. Shut down Dilley! No child should have to suffer like this.
@chuygarcia.house.gov: This bill gives schools the resources they need to help students heal from the aggressive, illegal, and cruel ICE actions that have terrorized our communities.
“A child’s classroom should never become another casualty of our immigration system.” - @chuygarcia.house.gov
It’s impossible to focus on learning if you’re scared of ICE, or afraid for your friends & family. The Right to Learn Act address what kids really need - safe classrooms & school supports for students & families. Thank you @chuygarcia.house.gov @repbonamici.bsky.social & Rep. Correa for this bill.
Students can’t learn when they’re living in fear. ICE raids and brutality have left many children afraid about their families and friends and themselves. I’m leading the Right to Learn Act with @chuygarcia.house.gov to protect public schools from harmful immigration enforcement activity.
IT'S TIME TO END THE ICE AGE. No more half-measures. Dismantle DHS. End for-profit detention. Stop criminalizing immigrants. Build a fair, accountable immigration system rooted in dignity. Pass the Melt ICE Act. That's what our communities deserve.
No child should have to learn in fear, & no school should have to endure the trauma of immigration enforcement in their community. That’s why I introduced the Right to Learn Act w/ Reps. Correa, Omar, & Bonamici to help schools & students confront these cruel Trump policies.
Happening now: @rweingarten.bsky.social joins @chuygarcia.house.gov, @repbonamici.bsky.social and Rep. Lou Correa for a press conference on the Right to Learn Act, to create safe, stable learning environments free of interference from immigration officers.
We should not give one more cent to Trump and Hegseth to start more wars of choice, while our constituents can’t make ends meet. We should be funding healthcare, education, and housing, not war, death, and destruction. Read my full statement below:
Dreamers, TPS, and DED recipients are at risk because of Trump’s mass deportation machine. It’s time for Congress to act and provide them with the certainty and pathway to citizenship they deserve. That’s why I’ve joined an effort to force a vote on the American Dream and Promise Act.
My statement condemning Trump’s ongoing election subversion.
Airport workers deserve good wages, quality health care, and dignity on the job. I’m proud to partner with @chuygarcia.house.gov on the Good Jobs for Good Airports Act to raise standards and put workers first. Together with @seiu.org, we’re fighting for good jobs at every airport.
Today’s historic vote illustrates the momentum behind our movement for peace, justice, and dignity for all people without exception. Read my full statement below:
As the Whip of the Progressive Caucus, I will vote YES on the Massie Amendment. I urge my colleagues to end the blank check for weapons to Israel.
My statement on the ongoing brutality and criminality of ICE:
Proud to stand with airport workers today to introduce the Good Jobs for Good Airports Act. The workers who keep our airports running deserve fair pay, good benefits, and the dignity that comes with a good job. Our bicameral, bipartisan bill will make that a reality.
ICE has killed another person. This pattern of violence and blatant disregard for human life cannot continue. There must be a full, independent investigation into every single death involving ICE, and accountability for all crimes committed by its thugs.
NEW: Investigators are looking into an ICE-involved shooting incident in Maine in which a 26-year-old Colombian man who was authorized to work in the U.S. was killed. DHS has not yet commented on the incident.
The affordable housing bill becomes law tonight—with or without Trump's signature. It’s beyond shameful he refuses to sign a bipartisan bill that would help lower housing costs all because he wants to pass a restrictive voting measure that would help him rig the midterms.
President Trump will let a bipartisan housing bill become law without signing it, in protest over a GOP voter ID law that lacks support.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a hardworking father and husband. ICE fatally shot him while he was on his way to work. There must be a full, independent investigation. ICE has shown us it cannot be trusted to investigate itself.
An ICE officer fatally shoots a Mexican national in Houston during an attempted traffic stop to conduct an immigration arrest, the DHS says. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
Birthright citizenship is fundamental to who we are as a nation and it’s a right that I will keep defending for future generations of U.S.-born babies. Read my full statement below:
Today marks the anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Supreme Court decision affirming the freedom to marry the person you love. We celebrate this historic victory and remain committed to defending LGBTQ+ rights and standing against extremist attacks on those freedoms. 🏳️🌈♥️
This Gun Violence Awareness Month, we remember the lives taken by gun violence and stand with the families and communities forever changed by it. I remain committed to advancing solutions that keep our communities safe and prevent more heartbreak.
This cruel decision puts hundreds of thousands of vetted, long-settled people at risk of detention and deportation, tearing mixed-status families apart. Congress must act now to protect TPS holders and provide a clear pathway to citizenship.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court allows the Trump administration to end legal protections for migrants fleeing violence and natural disaster in Haiti and Syria.
Trump abruptly canceled the signing of a bipartisan, bicameral bill that would make housing more affordable. This was a major win for the American people, but the President has decided to hold it hostage until his bill to destroy democracy is passed.
JUST IN: President Trump abruptly cancels his plans to sign a major, bipartisan housing bill, saying he will not do so until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, a sweeping elections bill that has become a focal point of his second term.
Today marks 4 years since Roe v. Wade was overturned. Four years of uncertainty, fear, & suffering for so many. As Republican attacks on reproductive freedom continue to escalate, I remain committed to defending & protecting your right to make your own health care decisions. #ReproductiveFreedomNOW
10 years ago, 49 lives were tragically taken in an act of hatred at the Pulse Nightclub. Today, we remember them and recommit ourselves to building a world where everyone can be true to themselves and live without fear of hatred and violence.
Today, we remember the 49 lives stolen at Pulse Nightclub, an LGBTQI+ nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Our members will continue working to end the epidemics of violence and hate so that no person ever has to live in fear of extremist violence like this ever again.
Inflation keeps rising. Higher gas and electricity prices are forcing people to make hard choices. And instead of helping families get some relief, Trump just signed a package giving $70 billion more to ICE and CBP.
Breaking News: U.S. inflation surged to a 4.2% annual rate in May, as higher energy prices put more pressure on the economy.
I was proud to stand this morning in support of Chicago Public Schools, our educators, and our students. It’s shameful that they are under attack by the Trump administration and Republicans, for implementing policies that parents and students have demanded.
