Today, unionized nonprofit newsrooms across the country are standing shoulder-to-shoulder to demand that news industry leaders agree to common-sense guardrails around the implementation of artificial intelligence to protect the integrity, quality and accuracy of our journalism.

This is exactly why we're demanding that as part of our new contract, @motherjones.com and @revealnews.org agree never to replace human workers with AI

In a note to staff, Business Insider EIC Jamie Heller says the publication is launching a pilot program called Business Insider AI News Desk that will use AI to “help publish quick news stories.” Several stories a day will now be “created by AI and edited by a person.”

Our editor-in-chief has written about how AI "enshitification" and "AI slop" has "ruined" search engines. We're asking management to work with us to ensure AI enshitification never ruins @motherjones.com and @revealnews.org

Why do workers need a seat at the AI table? The threat to our livelihoods and working conditions is obvious. It's clear that reckless use of AI could have catastrophic consequences for the reputations of our publications and the journalists who work here.

In short, don't replace us with bots. The leadership of a magazine named for a legendary labor leader should be happy to make that commitment. And it needs to be universal—covering print and radio; art, production and sound; business ops; and everything else.

Obviously, we aren't saying AI should never be used at all. But we are asking for two reasonable protections. 🔹Demand 1: Union work—and Union workers—must not be displaced by AI.

This is my periodic rant that Apple Intelligence is so bad that today it got every fact wrong its AI a summary of @washingtonpost.com news alerts. It's wildly irresponsible that Apple doesn't turn off summaries for news apps until it gets a bit better at this AI thing.

The NYT Guild unit council (which I'm on) voted UNANIMOUSLY to support The Athletic workers joining our unit. Our UC is never unanimous on anything. I've been as detached from union work as reporting work while on medical leave, but I logged on for the minute it took to vote an enthusiastic yes.
