I'm doing a workshop with some students and a lot of my advice is like ,less movement - less words. ('dialog is not acting' is a refrain) So many people with a love of characters make the mistake of only focusing on those 'fun' aspects and gloss over everything else that communicates just as much!

So much good insight in this thread into all the ways animation can be really magical beyond how “smooth” it is. Seeing it quiets a part of me that is rather tyrannical about how smooth my own animation needs to be for it to be “acceptable”.

When it comes to the animation world, there is something that brushed me the wrong way for the past decade and it's when people call an animator or an animation "bad" because it's not smooth like sakuga/anime ; vintage disney era. All animations does not need to be smooth to be called "good".

Okay, so many thoughts... I think we need to start by saying that framing the popularity of Chainsawman as incel literature is dangerously out of touch. Denji is a traumatized teenage boy seeking normalcy and a found family, I'm suspicious that the person quoted has not read it. Why start there?
