People confuse safety with social control. I don't think the post-pandemic crime panic was about people feeling less safe. I think it was a political frustration that state violence was constrained by the politics of the moment. That's why the media today could care less about these mayors' success

Two Black mayors took cities that the country loves to write off and made them measurably safer. That’s not a fluke. That’s a blueprint. Chicago and Baltimore just posted numbers that should be front-page news. They’re not. We need to talk about why. 🧵 www.theroot.com/opinion-blac...

AI surveillance companies treat schools like a playground for reckless technologies. This was never about safety, it always about profit, power and prejudice. They will keep inventing ways to criminalize Black, indigenous & disabled children, even if it takes automating the school to prison pipeline

Schools are adding pepper-spraying drones to help combat active shooters The plastic, non-lethal aircraft, which can smash windows and ram attackers will be at the ready at certain schools in Colorado, Florida and Georgia www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2026/...

So Waymo can kidnap your child and send them to jail at the company's discretion??? What's stopping them from turning in people suspected to be undocumented? What about every person with a warrant? What about everybody on a police database? Political protestors? Etc etc etc

Anyone who follows this account knows I’ve been warning about Waymo since they went live. Waymo willingly works with I.C.E. as well as cops. It’s NOT written explicitly in their policy, but Waymo’s actions are clear. I’ve personally witnessed evidence obtained from Waymo. This is very, very bad.

Dude is running his own localized surveillance state, including functions that are essentially predictive policing and a gang database, except it’s for people who have said anything remotely critical of the organization, or anyone who associates with those critics.

Madison Square Garden Kept a List of Gay Celebrities

An MSG database tracked and categorized hundreds of celebs, famous Knicks superfans, and even some of Taylor Swift’s wedding guests. Labels included “LGBTQIA,” “DO NOT HOST,” and low to high “risk.”

“As part of this update, public Instagram profiles are now automatically opted into being fodder for generative AI remixes. All someone has to do is tag your account’s profile in a prompt—if it’s public—and they can use Meta AI to generate an image using your likeness.”

Meta Now Lets Anyone Use Your Instagram Photos in AI Images—Unless You Opt Out

As part of Meta’s Muse Image model rollout, Instagram users with public accounts need to opt out to block AI generations of their content.

Respectfully, we do not know her inner thoughts. She may have felt courage, confusion, fear, humor, violence, exhaustion, humiliation, etc. She's entitled to all of those emotions bc she's a human being. It's enough that she survived racial terror

A Black woman sits on the DC metro as masked white Trump supremacists prepare to march on the streets of D.C. Look how proud she is to show her face while they are all too ashamed to show theirs. She’s a hero, they are all cowards….

ICE has access to school cameras; data centers are being built in kids' neighborhoods; schools are putting AI microphones in bathrooms; and AI is calling the cops on Black children for eating a bag of Doritos.... And the Dems big idea for Project 2029 is to take your kids' phone away...

Dems' "Project 2029" first major policy proposal: an online child safety plan — narrowing Sec. 230, banning social media for kids under 16, promoting phone-free childhoods and more. Already backed by Cory Booker, Mikie Sherrill, Randi Weingarten + Jonathan Haidt. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

You wanna know how dumb chatgpt is? I asked it a question about Olivia Rodrigo's 3rd album and it told me she's only released 2 albums. Her third album not only released but was #1, the singles all charting. Chatgpt can't even google shit. If you trust it's info for *anything* you are insane.

Algorithmic racism is more than "biased" training data. The political economy of AI requires a racialized underclass. The ppl suffocating from data center turbines are the same ppl surveiled by AI police tech; are the same ppl denied jobs housing & education by AI decisionmaking tools; etc.

NEW: the US government intervened Monday on behalf of xAI in a lawsuit over its gas turbines, claiming that the company needs to run the turbines in order to power Grok, which is "vital" for national security lots of wild stuff in the filing:

Eighteen people have died in ICE custody in the first five months of this year. ICE is on pace to pass last year’s toll, which was already the highest in two decades. So what is ICE doing about it? It is making the deaths harder to count.

Rescuers searched ruined buildings in the southern Philippines on Tuesday to ensure no one was still trapped a day after one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the country in a half-century killed at least 37 people and displaced over 20,000.

My day job is at a rural branch of a public library, and we have a Pride display. Yesterday I was at the desk when a man came in. Fifties, maybe, or sixties. Plaid shirt, mesh trucker cap, suspenders. He went up to the display and just stood there for a long moment. Then he came up to the desk. 🧵 1/
