Quite right - only adults should be driving fast.

Even the kinds of journalism that isn’t about propping up the ruling class - the trade press, say - is fundamentally flawed because it splits off knowing about things - as a practitioner would - from writing about them. So even articles about technical matters are full of shit.

It’s good that Rod Liddel is dead, but what about all the editors who chose to give him a platform?

Modernity is the process of replacing human and animal labour with energy (which has mostly come from fossil fuels), by using machines. We can have much more clothing if it’s mass produced, than if you have to weave the cloth on a hand loom yourself.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

The only change to UK building regs after Covid was to require the tiny little trickle vents - proven not to provide enough ventilation even to prevent mould, let alone airborne disease spread - in commercial buildings. They could have mandated proper ventilation but didn’t.

A smaller thing that irritated me about COVID was seeing all the screens and table wiping in buildings with no ventilation, from otherwise smart people, a good 12 months after we knew airflow was key.

Charities prop up the system. They provide chushy jobs for middle class people who feel commerce is beneath them, while occupying the position where an actually useful organisation might go.
