The story of our country and of the peoples who first called this land home is one of broken promises. This Indigenous Peoples' Day, may we honor those peoples—the Nacotchtank, Doeg, Piscataway, Monacan, and Powhatan—and recommit to reparative action for the harms inflicted through centuries.

The Ward 5 Week celebrations continue! Thanks to all the neighbors who joined us for fun times and sweet treats at Rita’s today! Special thanks to Manny & Olga’s, Zeke’s Coffee, and DC Squared + RIA Main Street! It’s all building to the big day: Ward 5 Day on Saturday, 12-5pm at Turkey Thicket!

Food from Ward 5 restaurants. Live music from Sirius Company go-go band. Go-karts + moon bounces. DC United soccer clinic. Line dancing. Resource tables. Giveaways. And more! You don’t want to miss the biggest party of the year celebrating all things Ward 5. Turkey Thicket, Saturday, 12-5pm!

Good news! The bill that would give Buwa Binitie development rights at Parcel 13 on St. Elizabeth's campus is off the agenda for markup today. This is a win for all the neighbors who have been calling for an end to business as usual and a land giveaway to a developer the District is actively suing.

Our country was forever changed 25 years ago on 9/11. I was honored to join this morning’s memorial unveiling for two Ward 5 victims—Sara Clark and Asia Cottom of the former Bertie Backus school. May their memory inspire us to love our communities well and foster the change needed for peace.

🚨 The Council is considering giving development rights to a contractor our government is actively suing. This defies reason. Join me in urging my colleagues to force Buwa Binitie to remedy concerns at 1400 Florida Ave NE and other properties that he's neglected with impunity for years.

Whether it's fighting for good-paying jobs in the RFK deal, joining the picket line w/ hotel workers, voting to expand the minimum wage, or standing w/ teachers for better contracts, I am proud support DC workers and grateful for the wins secured by generations of labor organizers. Happy Labor Day!
