The top of the Château de Chambord, France, is the most bizarre roof I’ve ever visited. François I made a turret city up there. None of my pictures from that day really convey the over-the-topness, but here is a corner, and view of the whole edifice #PalacesAndGardens #PalaceTops

Small turrets and towers, rounded and squared, rise from various slate gray pitched roofs on top of the largest chateau in France, created by Francis 1st in the 16th century. Its purpose was as an elaborate hunting lodge (and to show off the wealth and power of French royalty, of course). It’s a gray day, and the sky is mostly featureless. A few people are visible, dwarfed by the structure.
