Reflecting on the National AI in Research Survey. On substance, any "are you okay with using AI for assessing [X]?" question is a mirror of "are you okay with using a metric for assessing [X]?" We already use - and/or oppose the use of - scalable decontextualised shortcuts to judgement.

Interesting argument. The one thing I’d add is that maintains exploration/exploitation diversity needs to be a mandate for production and consumption, else we still drift to monoculture. Cf European content mandates forcing streamers to show minimum % regional content.
We have more data about ourselves than ever. So why is everything converging on the same? In my new post I use data on high streets, Billboard hits, a million films and my own AI personas to expose the algorithms behind the sameness and how to regulate them. laurenleek.substack.com/p/temperatur...
Has anyone in #intrinsicmotivation or #sdt worked on frustration over ceasing intrinsically motivated activity? Like, a toddler screaming bloody murder when they have to leave a swing. It's SO obvious, but I don't recall ANY model or explanation why stopping a fun activity is aversive.
When they work well, design schools, MBA programmes, incubators and accelerators seem to all embody one idea: that intelligence is collective. That the instigator/creator/founder is a high momentum sponge in a hypertrophic advice environment.

We regret that our event on Extreme Heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world has been cancelled due to the red extreme heat warning issued by the UK Met Office. Our apologies to everyone who was planning to attend the event.
I feel one part of successful adulting is to be able to compartmentalise space for joy: to be able, in a strict time/space window given by outer demands and under ongoing stress and disaffection, to fully let go into an activity that gives you joy.

2026 Post-GenAI Student Supervision [Student] Prompts PPT into existence [Supervisor] Critiques PPT [Student] Records and prompts critique to generate new PPT [Repeat] In this loop, the student reduces themselves to a replaceable data entry worker who doesn't run/test their own internal models.
Science is one of MANY systems where the values and best practices we communicate differ widely from actual practice, everyone knows but nobody talks about that gap on the record, and everyone collectively maintaining that tension does essential work to keep the system running as is, POSIWID-style.
Jubenshacon: Jubensha is Alibi for socialising/mate-finding with people in a third space.
Jubenshacon: here’s one for the Nordic Larpers: Quingganben or emotional scripts. Including player briefings on “how to cry beautifully” during a scene. 360 romance design.
Jubenshacon: David Middleton comparing Jubensha and escape rooms. Can’t help the TTRPG vibes of “it’s like improv, but on the table with rules.”
Jubenshacon thoughts: this repeats the TTRPG GNS triad as Puzzlism, Dramatism, Narrativism. And the cold start problem of „how to play this?“ when nobody is there yet to model and guide playing culture.
Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.
I thought I was „good at travelling.“ Now with kid and older parents, I realise I was just playing on Easy.
The thing is the *entire internet* is different now than it was a decade ago (and, largely, not for the better). All of this is interrelated and there's no going *backwards* only forward. So work for a better future, don't angle for a return to an idealized past.
High-tech anti-modernism: When the people who make and sell high-tech embrace anti-modernist postures – beard, bible, biceps. (Out of ... masculine self-loathing?)
Eventbrite has turned the simple 3 minute act of filling a web form into a 30 minute rage-quit session of having to wait for and undo useless AI-pregen "work saving magic" to then struggle and fail to get "responsive" JavaScript from hell to register and save an image and text description.
Unsolicited PI advice: never put a student on the critical path of any software development project that others will rely on.* *Unless they were a software developer in their previous career.
@guyintheblackhat.bsky.social say, to brush up on my knowledge about the (women‘s) parlour game etc prehistory of TTRPGs, what should I read? Quick public access resources preferred
On Saturday at 3 PM ET I'm going to be streaming a game I haven't thoroughly played since the mid-90s -- Cosmology of Kyoto, the early game that blew Roger Ebert's mind with the possibilities of an "open world." Also you can get molten metal poured into your ass and out of your mouth! Be there.
Here's our whole fundraiser schedule at a glance! It all goes down THIS SATURDAY, February 21, 11AM-11PM ET -- don't miss it! (and don't forget to donate!) donate.romchip.org
