The great carbon capture con: behold the wasted billions Burnham could claw back | George Monbiot | Simon Oldridge
George Monbiot is right to call for expensive carbon capture plans to be halted. Ed Miliband was also right to push CCS during the Brown government. Back then it made sense to try and capture emissi...

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.
I have shared all the individual #songswithoutwords videos, but below is the video containing all 8 pieces. The sheet music is here, too. Have a go, or share with someone who’d like to have go! music.philipseaton.net/catalogue/op... Will get to work on the next piece 🙂 youtu.be/pqAQstjIZxg?...

8 Hope The last piece in #songswithoutwords Of course, it had to be Hope. But we need respect, compromise, empathy and justice etc to realize that hope. If these piano pieces have given even just one or two people a little boost in tough times, I am happy. youtu.be/yc_KWPkpswk?...

"Today, Okinawa remains one of the most militarized places on the planet. Its landscape is dominated by the current bases - 31 US and 57 Japanese Self-Defense Force facilities - alongside hundreds of memorials and museums to World War II" -- my piece at FPIF for @ips-dc.org fpif.org/islands-of-p...

5 Greed The increasingly extreme concentration of wealth in the hands of a few super rich people is completely unhealthy, not least for those greedy people themselves. This piece is short and to the point. #songswithoutwords youtu.be/pQ9mIUIj09k?...

It’s way too far for most, I know, but Sinfonia Concertante has its chamber version debut in Tokyo on 25 July. In the meantime, much closer to you on YouTube, #songswithoutwords are coming very soon …
It's a bit trickier to mix politics with music that doesn't have (obvious) words, but definitely worth doing! Personally I prefer to make the politics very unambiguous through the words :) choirsforclimate.com choirsagainstracism.com

Why #songswithoutwords ? There are words. Poems are hidden in the melodies. Repeat an E, S (E flat), i(staccato), S, up a Tone, A, turN, E. Resistance. It’s the BACH method for the entire alphabet and an entire piece. Does it make for good music? First one coming this time tomorrow.
1 Resistance 2 The Anthropocene 3 Eighty-nine Seconds to Midnight 4 Dear AI 5 Greed 6 Antisocial Media 7 1984/2026 8 Hope #songswithoutwords for piano. Any preferences about which is shared first?
“Don’t mix politics and classical music”, I have been told. To which my answer is “Pomp”, “Leningrad “, “Eroica” and #songswithoutwords (watch this space). Actually, it’s just about making sure you are on the right side of history … and writing good music. Regarding both, time will tell.

Looking forward to various musical things this week!
My book (as editor) “Music as Heritage and Tourism Resource in Japan” is now “in press” with Routledge. More details to follow … but out around New Year? It’s a book that relies on my experience trying to get music performed alongside the usual tools in researcher’s toolbox = hours in the library!
