GIS wonk occasionally kidnapped by archaeologists, palaeontologists and fish people. Photographer, knapper, and all weather cyclist in a city reputed to be winter 11 months per year. #GIS #archaeology #climate #cycling #yegbike #yegdt #cats #photography
In which an old friend who I dug with in Japan corrects a YouTube video’s misconceptions about Japanese archaeology.
It takes a lot to rouse me from the deep depression of the past year. Apparently, misrepresenting Japanese archaeology will do it...rivaled only by deleting comments, which I’ll share the gist of below. Who knows? Maybe this has incited me to finally start creating content again.
Ran across a guy on Facebook showing how he had enhanced lidar hillshades of Stonehenge to emphasize signatures of Bronze Age to Romano-British agricultural enclosures with Google Gemini and ChatGPT. Anyhow, I did this with a bit of screwing around in Eduard and QGIS. #GIS #archaeology
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but demanding that office workers no longer be allowed to work from home isn’t going to make me come to your noise bar to eat your pretentious take on pub slop next to six lanes of traffic. #yegdt
The Alberta "Report a Bike Lane" form has somewhat limited options. There isn't really a category for "under attack by a day-drinking massive dweeb". But I have made do. #yegbike
Hi. We're in the Age of Diarrhea. I'm a global health expert on helping children survive diarrhea. Here's what to do if you might have picked up cyclospora. 🧵 1. Call your primary care if possible. 2. Take oral rehydration therapy, which isn't just drinking fluids. 1/
welcome to the Age of Diarrhea
"Deeply sad about the loss of Ringwraith #4. We might have disagreed on policy, such as stabbing hobbits and murdering innocent villagers and working for the Dark Lord Sauron, but he loved riding horses and supporting his fellow Nazgûl. Wish he'd had more time." -Canadian politicians, apparently
In Edmonton we tend to run them on low traffic side streets without businesses. Even downtown they run along routes that aren’t really fronted by things. Nevertheless locations have emerged alongside them that have turned out to be popular destinations for dining.
Does replacing parking with bike-lanes hurt restaurant business? Of course not, as this new peer-reviewed STUDY of 15 years of Montreal data showed. ACTUALLY, downtown experienced significant restaurant growth after bike lanes were installed. @momentummag.bsky.social momentummag.com/do-bike-lane...
Edmonton has done a lot as a bike city, but boy oh boy do we have far to go in some ways. We still close the only bike route into downtown from the east for peak bike season to store dumpsters, like we've done every year . #yegbike
Ah yes. Piddles is bringing back the "warrior" culture.
There are folks who get deeply upset because they show up to feedback sessions to the city about things like infill and bike lanes and go full howler monkey, and their input is not 100% implemented even though the candidates who represented their interests got their clocks cleaned at the ballots.
Twitter is an actual neo-nazi cesspool, but on Bluesky you can get ridiculed for being a posh out of touch wanker who relentlessly represents the views of the neoliberal elite by people who know what a neoliberal is.
A lot of people left X for Bluesky because of the tone of the discourse there (I wasn't one of them, as it happens). But do be aware that angry lefties aren't above personal insults. If your answer is "oh but you said something I disagree with online", it might be worth rethinking a few things.
The flood and stormwater backup warnings have hit the entire Edmonton area now. Please, everybody, stop flushing your toilets.
Alberta separatists constantly and openly brag of receiving US support. Alberta the lowest-hanging fruit of the annexation agenda.
“From what I’m seeing, travelling across the province, a vast majority of Albertans are proud Canadians and proud Albertans at the same time. We see that as two inseparable things, and as long as we keep that spirit, we’ll be fine.” #ableg #cdnpoli edmontonjournal.com/news/america...
New poop science just dropped.
A paper in Nature Communications reports on squirrel droppings preserved in Canadian permafrost containing 700,000-year-old ancient DNA. The findings enable the reconstruction of ancient ecosystems and shed new light on the evolutionary history of certain species. go.nature.com/4vFchfz #evosky 🧬🧪
Reading #Enshittification by Cory Doctorow, and realizing one chapter in as he outlines his premise and process by which enshittification happens that the LLM generative AI folks have basically been in a competitive speed run of the whole arc.
NPR seems to have been one of the faster knee benders what with their “wow Canada doesn’t want to be the 51st state how weird is that” phase. Now they’re on to absolute anatomical improbability.
DHS was originally conceived in the interest of unity and harmony — and the phrase "homeland security" was originally meant to be reassuring. n.pr/4nOx8KP
