the fatal mistake of Ted Lasso was they believed landing the anxiety and divorce stuff in season 1 meant the show was also a Great Television Series with Things to Say About People and Society. the new season works because, so far at least, it’s just trying to be a cute, funny show.

I’m sure it beefed up morale a hell of a lot.”
y'all know how i feel about Nolan, but you'd have to go back to like Killer's Kiss to find a Kubrick movie that's worse than the best Nolan movie

this was about Ted Lasso, whose fourth season premiere is one of the worst episodes of TV i've ever seen (and then the second episode is instantly back to the fun and charming feel of season 1)

started reading Religions of Rome, by Mary Beard, John North and Simon Price, and it’s so damn good. academic but entirely approachable.
i’m a big fan of everyone saying “Zeus’s Law” in The Odyssey. it feels exactly like how people refer to ideological shit nowadays. especially love when Pattinson says it, with a hint of scorn.

I have a big piece on CAMP MIASMA dropping later this year, but I'll just say now that I liked it a lot. I found it moving. It's a different tone than Schoenbrun's elegies to dysphoria, but not entirely. It's still about being in a body, but there's an attempt to make peace with that here.
funny thing about this: yesterday i shared an old piece i wrote about my relationship to The Decemberists, and my girlfriend at the time told me she cried while reading it, which was *not* my intention! (but i was of course happy to have the reaction)

do you ever have strong, palpable, emotional responses to books while reading? i'll chuckle occasionally, and sometimes a suspenseful passage will have my heart racing a bit, but for example i can't say i've ever teared up or cried while reading a book
bluesky has gotten better at sports, and is improving on movies, but there's still a high likelihood of getting a "not *my* president"-style reply to a thread about Spider-Man, or worse, an "i haven't been to a movie theatre in 20 years because being around other humans alarms me"-style reply
bluesky is very good for getting people to click links [finger on monkey's paw curls] unfortunately all the people clicking those links are illiterate
it's quite clear that having to co-produce the Spider-Man movies with Sony has also kept that franchise creatively in check (relatively speaking), which is a testament to the importance of anti-monopolization
thing about seeing Yojimbo on 35mm is it makes every other movie look like garbage in comparison
got to see McKenzie present this movie at one of several screenings here did in Toronto, the doc was fun (amazing scene with Sam Bankman-Fried!), and the q&a was one of the best i’ve ever seen someone do, it was wild
