My review of The Bride! Fuck I love this movie.

I have a feeling this movie will be reappraised in several years as the nuanced, confident work that it is. There's so much going on here, and I love it all. A fantastic look at how women (and men) are forced into gender roles, taught to constantly enact them, even when it goes against who they truly are. A fight to find yourself as a woman in a world that limits your imagination and doesn't give you a way to dream beyond it: how to dream of you when all the roles you're given are wife, bride, slut, whore. The answer it first seems to be is to define yourself by rage. Rage at the world that limits you. You seek to destroy it, fight back, do violence against the machinery and cogs (who are themselves people) who enact it on you. But this movie shows that even that is not enough; how simply rage just turns you into the monster everyone sees you to be, and it hurts your soul because you are told to have no empathy for those who harm you; to only seek retribution and maybe justice (in whatever form this world will define justice as for you)... but never liberation. She is a negatory force, Lee Edleman's sinthomosexual made manest, she could take the whole damn system down... or so she is told. She is the villain, the monster, to be laid at the altar of society; the thing in the dark that we must destroy. And with Frank, it shows how men can move beyond the fantasy they have been taught to desire, their perfect objectified, obliterated Galeta woman, and instead seek true partnership; to be created and creator and created again; to not be indebted to those that made you but seek to connect. Every week, the gatekeepers of horror writers have some new witch hunt. Sometimes it’s a good thing to suss out shitty publishers, editors, and agents. Yet, not ALL shitty ones are sussed out because, you know, there are consequences to getting all the shitty people shut down. Some people still like the opportunities to get published or represented even if it means going with the most despicable people because the gatekeepers didn’t get them shut down, or sometimes, don’t even notice. It all depends on who is buttering the toast.
