“In that case, I don’t know what more we can do,” Makoto says reluctantly. “He knew what Akechi was like when they got together, and he’s not a kid anymore. Maybe the best thing we can do is leave him alone.”
“He would never say that if it were one of us,” says Yusuke. “Not a chance.”
“I’m not saying we should abandon him. Just that maybe we shouldn’t pry.”
“Screw that,” says Ann. “I’m with Yusuke. If nothing else, we could at least try to cheer him up.”
“Look, we all know what needs to happen here. I’ll be the one to say it: somebody’s just got to take one for the team.” Futaba pushes her glasses up her nose like an anime mastermind, studying the group with a faux-grave expression. “I vote Yusuke or Ryuji.”
“Um, for what?” Sumire asks.
“Akira’s rebound arc. Obviously. Haru’s taken, Ann’s gay, and Makoto is too uptight, so—”
“Excuse me?” says Makoto, her voice rising in pitch.
Futaba waves a hand, dismissive. “Fine, fine. Makoto’s an option too.”
Makoto’s face reddens. “I don’t—I wasn’t volunteering! *No one* is volunteering!”
“I would,” says Yusuke.
