83% of Will Dreher's campaign money is from out of state, much of it from employees of OpenAI & Anthropic, & he has a grand total of *20 donors* in his district. One of Matt Yglesias’s defining political positions is that Democrats should be more moderate in order to attract more votes. But moderation is a moving target, as evidenced by the rapid change in public opinion on Israel-Palestine over the last few years.

Moderation Is Not a Real Political Strategy

Pundits who say politicians should strategically “moderate” their views have a simple problem: the majority viewpoint is often changing. Just look at Matt Yglesias’s advice to Democrats on Israel, where the moderate position rapidly shifted under his feet.

Adding to this thread: it’s a common mistake (I’ve made it myself, many times) to think of the motivations of the capitalist elites as essentially mercantilist: that is, that they are largely still motivated *entirely* by profit and loss, selling product, etc. This has not been true for a while.

It's still smart for Brin. He's worth $240 billion; this tax could theoretically cost him $12 billion. This is a fraction of that. But *even if the math didn't work for him*, he'd still do it. He'd spend $20 billion to save $1 billion of it came to that, because the numbers aren't the point.

I have been to so many Democratic org meetings where people insisted the Democrats were a "big tent coalition". I had to accept people who were anti-tax, anti-trans, anti-universal healthcare, anti- every social good because the Democratic party welcomes everyone. Funny how that means nothing now.
