If we taxed 1% more on the top 1%, we could fund hundreds of thousands of these and still have enough money to save UK academia from collapsing. (1% on the 1% could be around £13.4B a year…)

Sadly it's not just #JodrellBank losing funding, with deep cuts across the board for UK astronomy. One example is the HiPERCAM project whose funding has been entirely cut to save £50K/yr - peanut-levels of £s. Spectacular fast transient science lost, for what? 🔭😡 www.zmescience.com/science/astr...

I'm absolutely devastated for colleagues at Jodrell Bank who found out this morning that funding for the UK's e-MERLIN radio telescope array will be terminated. This is a short-sighted move, to save a tiny fraction of the overall UK science budget. #SaveJodrellBank 🔭🧪 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I am honestly getting sick and tired of cosmology as a field. It's a race to the bottom, papers appearing everything with fundamental methodological mistakes that will be accepted anyway because they ~feel right. Science done on vibes and not with criteria.

Excited to share something we've been building at the Oskar Klein Centre! A few months ago, an #NVIDIA #DGXSpark landed on my desk. I started running local #LLMs, not for chat, but to see what they could do for science... and so we started building a multi-agent system for cosmological analysis!

One reason why UK universities are in trouble is growth of layers of management, HR & marketing These depts do not bring in money. They consume but don't produce Worse still, many of them like HR create massive additional problems & costs -- all distracting from core mission of research & teaching

I think sometimes the UK should learn from how we do things in Latin America: Before things would reach this stage, students and staff would have occupied the chancellor’s/provost’s office, barricade the doors to the university and demand changes that would avoid these massive layoffs.

STFC cuts will accelerate the closure of UK physics departments, even though everyone recognises the importance & value of physics to UK PLC. Physics is explicitly listed as an area affected by planned compulsory redundancies at Nottingham. So sad to see this. www.theguardian.com/education/20...
