I love Stand Alone Complex. All my homies love Stand Alone Complex.
I think the funniest part of the broadly misinformed GitS discourse going on at the moment is the erasure of any entry between specifically the first Oshii film and this new TV show. Some people didn't grow up with Laughing Man as the avatar of 30% of guys online and it shows
Turning a fun but rather barebones series of gags like Nakamura-kun into a full-length TV series kinda demanded more pathos to work, and few people better than Haruka Fujita to make the yearning and everyone's angst hit stronger than ever
The defining trait of Jaadugar is its patterning: it's the most visually arresting aspect, a useful tool to get across the texture of each culture, and time and time again it holds thematic significance as well. The anime uses them to immediately establish a thriving, rich civilization
But making the setting 3D and real wasn't the answer they wanted. Yamada talked about valuing the original's simple 2D appeal, akin to Islamic miniatures. This causes the anime to go back and forth between very literal, spacious locations and deliberate, flat irreality. There's charm to the duality
The staff agreeing about the importance of showing How People Live demands emphasis on the physical depiction of the setting, because there's no mundanity and culture without a place that hosts them. Right off the bat, we're lost in the architecture of Tus
Stunning premiere for Jaadugar. The level of cultural research and respect is on display, but Tomato Soup & the team led by Abel Gongora and Naoko Yamada make it clear they don't want a detached historical retelling with affecting, highly subjective storytelling. As unique as it is high quality
NEXT WEEK!!! at table f15, i'll be in anime expo's artist alley where i'll have new stickers, pokemon sticker sheets, and a new print! i'll also be debuting my upcycled linocut printed shirts (limited sizes and colors)!! can't wait to see everyone there!
Today the Supreme Court just blocked thousands of lawsuits claiming Roundup causes cancer. The court sided with chemical giant Monsanto, ruling that federal law preempts cancer victims from bringing these lawsuits in state courts, where most of the claims are filed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTmt...

The cut to SSI for families who also rely on SNAP was not the Social Security Administration’s idea, even though that agency runs the SSI program. Instead, it was initiated by top White House and DOGE officials last year, ProPublica has learned.

But two libraries in Portugal have a much older method. Biblioteca Joanina is a 300 year old library near the University of Coimbra & they use all-natural pest control: BATS. Every night, tables & chairs are covered & the library's bat colony guards within & without for insect interlopers.
Witch Hat Atelier being good as an anime was no surprise, but this felt like the first episode where it surpassed the idea of being a replica & became a meaningfully different experience that stands the comparisons to the original. Not sure how often they'll be able to pull this off, but damn great
Official statements noted that the Witch Hat Atelier anime was, under Shirahama's supervision, expanding on the original work. And it hasn't been until the incredible third episode that we've really seen what they meant, with Coco's test being fleshed out & connected more firmly to her character arc
A new report from the University of California shows that the state's decision to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20/hr didn’t hurt jobs, or raise prices much. Data from over 2,000 restaurants shows that the $20/hr minimum wage didn’t reduce employment. /1

Was planning to tell people that Ganbare Nakamura-kun was the real modern Ranma, but I might start adding that it's Doremi too. None of it is wholly untrue
The OP derives a pop art visual language out of aspects like the series' old-school logo, whereas the ending outright goes for 80s & technically early 90s songs. Been clear since the announcement but the anime really gets the Rumiko Takahashi-ish vibes it evokes
Ganbare Nakamura-kun is a sweet adaptation so far. Feels reminiscent of Seihantai's in that much of the appeal is the way that familiar material is processed, but unlike that one (and partly by necessity of such concise short material), it has a lot of original material to flesh out a cute romcom

You knowl Ikoku Nikki owns because its passing thoughts are more resonant (conceptually & in their delivery) than the main themes of entire works. "The ways in which patriarchal behaviors are harmful for boys" could fill up a show, but here it's another thread in an episode about forging your self
Ikoku Nikki can excel "just" by observing society. Of course, that's only within its reach because it cares about all sorts of people in the first place, because it can give shape to an incredibly diverse craft through their grounded routines, and because its occasional abstraction hits that hard
We will see our friends again someday, so we will care for this world they left behind. And I know they will be proud of us.
