Today marks the 5000th Men's ODI match but both games are washed out. Just like feelings towards the ODI format itself, it is all a bit of damp squib.

Guyana's Global Super League comes to an end with the 47 year-old Imran Tahir, 41 year-old Mohammad Nabi and 41 year-old peter Siddle taking 8 wickets between them in the final. So much for using the event to develop Guyanese cricket.

"There is also an inter-dependency here: we could be wonderfully successful and sell Lord's out for every home game, but we need everyone else to do it… It has to be a genuine partnership, or else it won't be successful." Great idea! We should try doing it in international cricket...

Credit to Babar Azam for fighting to the bitter end in what is now a hopeless cause in this first test against West Indies. Obviously the PCB will reward such grit and tenacity by blaming him entirely for the defeat, stripping him of the captaincy again and dropping him from the side completely.
No effort from the ETPL to use the current Dutch WCL fixtures or next week's Scottish WCL fixtures to promote their competition or the nations it is meant to be benefitting. Yeah... This competition ain't happening this year. Why break with tradition?
Spent the last two months building a statistical archive of South African women's provincial cricket. And honestly, it fokken sucked at times. Felt like I spent more time creating the missing puzzle pieces than putting the puzzle together.

MLC final showed how weak the competition is. The winning team was made up of geratric CPL players, most of which are retired from international duty. It is hard to see how this competition has a long-term future. Expansion plans look to be a hail mary play rather than a result of natural growth.

The headline sums up how we came to this situation. The focus is what do all these ODI World Cup changes mean for England rather than what do all these changes mean for international cricket as a whole. When it comes to growing the game, self-interest comes first.
The ICC will make three teams who qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup play off again for the right to be in the main group stage.
The Caribbean Olympic Qualifiers might be the most exciting and unpredictable international cricket tournaments in the next 18 months.
New ODI World Cup qualifying rules mean the Netherlands, who qualified for the 2023 WC ahead of ZIM and WI, then beat SA and BAN at the WC, have to compete in an extra qualifying round to play the big teams. Meanwhile all four of those other teams qualify automatically due to full member privilege.

The main business model for the Mugafi Group, which owns the ETPL's Glasgow Cosmic, is based on taking IP for nothing, running it through AI image generators for almost nothing and then selling the end result as their own branded IP. When the AI bubble pops, so will their business model.

West Indies Women may have demolished Ireland today but it only papers over the massive cracks in the Caribbean's development system. You can't run a professional set-up where players play fewer than one game a month and expect them to win tournaments.
NEW ARTICLE ✍️ @mashstpaddy.bsky.social looks back at West Indies Women's T20 World Cup campaign. It was another tale of overcoming the odds but how much longer can CWI expect an underfunded & undeveloped women's game to reap rewards? caribbeancricketnews.counterpress.media/opinion/west...
ETPL announces a list of broadcasters but unless I am missing something there doesn't seem to be a Dutch one yet. Or for Europe outwith UK/IRE for that matter. You would think it would be important for a league that constantly talks about growing cricket in Europe for Europeans to actually see it.
Another aspect of adding cricket to the Olympics the ICC either hasn't forseen or believed it could handwave away through 'cricket exceptionalism'. With Olympic status comes extra media scrutiny and Pandora's box of cricket is about to be opened.

Jai Moondra, hero for Ireland against India and second overall pick in the ETPL draft last week, made his return to domestic cricket yesterday with figures of 0-94 off his 7 overs. He did manage to score the winning runs in a record chase of 418 for Leinster Lightning though. That's something.
As the ETPL struggles to both find and engage with its target audiences in Europe, the Glasgow Cosmic continue to do incomprehensible things.

Criticism of ODIs is pure full member privilege at it's most egregious. For associates, without WCL and Challenge League, the only guaranteed fixtures they get are a week of T20 internationals every 2 years. You can't develop or maintain interest on that basis, nevermind run a professional set-up.
