The Heretic

“You speak of treasures given from the heavens yet none are to be found. You speak of a world unknown even to the Lord’s divine light, yet I, his chosen king, am supposedly burned from its holy soil. You speak of impossible sins of the flesh, a blasphemous rejection of his creation, and yet I, burdened with his unyielding love, still stand here to offer you a final chance at redemption.
Renounce your outlandish claims, and return to the light of our kingdom, heretic.”

The King spoke firmly, with an authority only given by one’s own delusions, down to The Heretic standing below him, their blood staining the detestable fabrics of the King’s court.

The Heretic slowly turned their gaze upwards towards the king, their hair tough and stained, their eyes bloodshot and weary.
“Burdened with unyielding love?…”

The Heretic spoke, a coarse raspy voice filling the court.
“You view the light of heaven as another treasure for your men to plunder, you view the land of the eternal night sky as a kingdom owed to you by blood, you condemn my use of my own flesh while you build the walls of your castle with the still-warm bodies of innocents.”

The King scowled, his knuckles pale as ice as he gripped the edge of his throne. He opened his mouth wide to speak, but was silenced yet again.

“I’ve seen it, a world of endless night, dense dark forests where the first beings hide in the shadows of the starlight, mountains tall enough to feel the heat of the first flames, vast deserts where the fine sand and blood-red rock become one with the light of those who have freed themselves.”
The Heretic continued on, speaking with an unyielding reverence.

“These everlasting stars showed me the true nature of this world, they showed me just how weak the constraints we have held ourselves to for decades truly are, and at last, they have shown me the future, where beings of stardust dance atop a crimson glow, basking in a light that will never touch your skin, for it is in this future, that the memories of your rule, have faded like blood into red carpet.”
The Heretic spoke before spitting onto the floor below, their blood fading into the dyed fabric.”

The King rose from his throne enraged, determined to silence those who would dare question the fragility of his domain. He drew his sword, marching towards a gleeful Heretic, his brow red with rage and stained with sweat, before lunging forward, piercing the blade through the blasphemous neck of The Heretic.
The King panted, deep heavy breaths, his throat frozen by his cold breath, his hands shaking as his court looked onward in shock.
The King raised his head, only to see the warm smile of The Heretic still standing.

The Heretic slowly lifted their blood-stained hands as The King looked on in disbelief and terror. Like a loving caretaker, The Heretic placed their hands to The King’s face, leaning forward to press their forehead to his.
“There is no death you can give me that can extinguish a flame that has burned since the first stars began their dance.”
The Heretic spoke softly, like a parent comforting an enraged child.
Before The King could speak, he blinked, The Heretic suddenly vanishing without a sound as if cut from the very tapestry of his world. The crimson stains left behind marking the King’s ghostly pale face as the only proof of their words.

It was now, under a night sky darker than the deepest void, that The Heretic stood. Feet crunching the piercing ice of a snow-covered mountain top as they gazed into the abyss above. A soft warm glow emanating from the depths of their rib cage as the stars filled their lungs
The Heretic breathed deeply, a deep love coursing through their veins, their heart racing as the night sky came to life with light.
