Does vegan protein build muscle? Are plants actually toxic? Is a plant-based diet always healthiest? While the hardcore carnivores and herbivores duke it out, the rest of us are caught in the confusing crossfire. Here are four myths about plant proteins, antinutrients, and plant-based diets.

Dozens of countries have adopted front-of-package nutrition labels to empower consumers. It’s time the U.S. joins them! The Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2026, intro'd today by @blumenthal.senate.gov and @booker.senate.gov, would overhaul food labels for the first time in more than 30 years.
Surprise, surprise: recent funding cuts to food safety by the Trump administration have been slowing down the response to food outbreaks, including the recent "explosive diarrhea" outbreak caused by cyclospora.

Companies like Coca-Cola have spent billions of dollar over the past 100 years advertising their ultra-sugary drinks in Times Square. Yesterday, we said enough is enough. Our coalition held a rally there to raise awareness and say: FLATTEN BIG SODA!
“It’s a toxic mix of limited federal resources, limited federal authority, and ... similar limitations at the state level...." said @drpeterlurie.bsky.social “But the end result of it is that the products are sold in an almost unregulated fashion.”

FDA staff have historically chosen their advisors on panels. I told @rachelroubein.bsky.social of @washingtonpost.com that HHS selecting members of the upcoming peptides panel implies a degree of political involvement - a classic case of the Trump admin breaking a norm without breaking regulation.

That panel will meet to weigh whether the agency should allow Americans to have broader access to seven injectable peptides previously restricted over potential safety concerns.

🚨 UPDATE 🚨 On July 16, the FDA issued an advisory that consumers should avoid eating shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Additional states may be added as more information becomes available.
NEW UPDATE: The CDC has confirmed that cases are elevated nationwide at 1645 confirmed cases this outbreak season relative to 249 this time last year. While this could still all be from one massive outbreak centered in Michigan, it's safe to say that this is now a nationwide problem.
Heard about the "explosive diarrhea" parasite? 💩 Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic infection that's been headlining the news, but chances are good that you're probably safe from getting it. However, it doesn't hurt to be careful, so here's a thread of what you need to know 👇🧵
Did you know the federal government doesn't actually regulate food expiration dates? 🤯 Except for infant formula, those "Sell By" and "Best By" dates are completely made up by food brands—and it's causing the average American to throw away over $762 a year in perfectly safe food.
How fixing food date labels could reduce waste and confusion
Confusion around food date labels leads 88% of consumers to discard food that's still good to eat. Standardizing date labels could lead to lower food waste.
