Interested in mathematics, computer science, history, political thought, and the (lack of) "ethics" of AI. Anonymous because questioning AI is career limiting behaviour.

Rings of power that will grant theorems, preserve the techbros of Lothlórien so they do not have to believe themselves mortal; build an unstoppable army to crush humanity at Helms Deep (“military advantage”), and massive carbon emissions over Mordor. Come on folks, take a look in the mirror here…

No. The belief that technical progress is to be worshipped uncritically is at best Futurist (as in the people who became fascists) and at worst actually Fascist. The belief that all change is a march of progress is Whig imperialism. The belief that good change is possible, *that’s* progressive.

If I thought Anthropic would stop at “coding“ this would comfort me. But really loving the blame the victim vibe. Was the intellectual puzzle of clearly structuring and ordering the expression of some algorithm your thing, maybe you thought PLT was interesting? You have a defective personality.

people (not the mystery OP) willing to minimize themselves into “coder” or “programmer” boxes seem to be taking this whole thing real hard and, well, maybe a second personality trait or competency would have helped I guess

Exactly this. But I’m not sure I believe the last part. I’m concerned he’ll build something close-enough to still arrogate spectacular power and ruin a lot of people’s lives. He kind of doesn’t *need* to succeed *technologically* to succeed *economically* and *politically*.

This is actually a fucking chilling thing for a longtermerist to say. "Broadly benefit humanity" = "fuck everyone alive right now, it needs to create the future that I believe in" The only comforting thing is that he's not going to do number one, because he's a liar.

The failure, by contrast, by the effective “altruists”, transhumanists, boosters and love-of-the-gamers on the right, to recognise in good faith that the rest of us might have not only the means but the right to seriously constrain them is offensive and counterproductive to real discourse.

The anti-ai Left world has migrated from denialism and IP to business-model critique to cancel culture. There are many reasons to fear ai but they all require understanding it’s not going away. The cancel culture prevents thinking about all the true risks. Similar to climate and the right.

Glasswing is basically DDoS blackmail against the SW industry. “Here’s an inhumanly large number of security bugs, no we won’t tell you the FPR or how many _really_ matter” “golly that will take a while” …

When the death drones come to kill us all some people will still be writing articles about how being blown apart by an automatic face-seeking flying hand grenade will never match the artisanal elegance of being shot by a human. In the meantime we can microdose the feeling here.

It is not “failing,” because the reason it exists is so Meta can say “look at all our efforts to eliminate harassment content.” Their so-called policy exists to insulate them from criticism. They have been doing this for as long as the company has been in existence. It’s chapter 1 in the playbook.

Meta's Attempted Crackdown on AI Glasses Perverts Is Already Failing

Creeps are continuing to film themselves harassing women with Meta smart glasses, racking up millions of views on Instagram.

He’s a fantasist but this is a genuinely powerful tech and their first wishes will not (are not!) benefitting us. If you don’t want to be a powerless subject to the techbros’ whims and visions, you need a theory of resistance more muscular than “wait for it to implode.” It won’t on its own.

“What we need to explain to the world: Number one, we are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. Number two, we are going to make sure that our first wishes broadly benefit humanity” - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI — This is definitely the opposite of Anthropic’s AI kills all jobs pitch.

The basic challenge of watermarking is information-theoretic: it is by definition subperceptual, and therefore by definition the sort of thing good lossy compression can, shld, and eventually will clobber. Removal will _eventually_ be easy. This is just very clever manipulative PR from Google.

While labeling AI content is a good policy for tech firms, it probably won’t save the rest of us who have to deal with its outputs.

Occasionally I think Kubernetes is nicely designed, and then I come across BS like “projected” volumes that are actually kinda the opposite and remember that no, it’s all a product of the dark side…

In a hilarious juxtaposition, the immediately previous post in my feed was someone extolling hope for an AI utopia driven by a ”political superintelligence” They didn’t specify whether it would offer to fist anyone.
