Wow! @menendez.house.gov says that the EXACT scenario I flagged two months ago, where ICE "releases" someone having a medical emergency solely so their death won't be recorded as occurring while in custody, happened last month at the infamous Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, NJ.

Other private prison companies which contract with ICE include: - The GEO Group (the Wackenhut Corrections Corporation until 2004) - The Management and Training Corporation (a Jobs Corps company which expanded into the private prison business in 1987) - LaSalle Corrections (appropriately named)

Ian B. Bautista@xicanodekcenmke.bsky.social · 2h agoThe name, CoreCivic sounds so wholesome, altruistic, and democratic. The reality is abusive, terroristic, and authoritarian. Those are OUR tax dollars. We should not invest them so horribly.
ICE has now spent over $2.2 BILLION on purchasing 4 private prisons from CoreCivic, with the company banking half a billion dollars on the most recent sale. Of course, ICE will not actually operate these facilities; CoreCivic keeps the contracts to run these places for the foreseeable future.
So that’ll be nearly $1 billion between sale and operations for 1600 beds.

CoreCivic will still manage the facility, which is expected to start receiving ICE detainees this fall.
