Step 3: mainstream parties need to demonstrate effective governance like the survival of the system depends on it. Current and previous govts have seemed paralyzed and unable to stick with promises and plagued by internal fighting. Need party elites to crack down on showboating and corruption.
also step 4 connected to step 1: just as you can’t out anti migrant the far right, you can‘t out anti-woke them either. Dabbling in transphobia and other issues is morally wrong and it’s also politically a loser because you sell out your own people, look like phonies and don’t get the bigot vote.
Step 2 is focusing on delivering on everyday problems that can actually be solved by Public policy: fix the train network, get energy prices down and actual tackle the huge increase in housing costs.
Step one to that is to stop echoing and reinforcing the far right on migration, particularly since anti migration policies often further economically undermine fragile communities that could tip more to the far right.
From those I’ve spoken to in political science who have studied this more closely, the strategy they recommend is concentrating on mobilizing non far right voters and maximizing demoralization of far right constituencies who are most prone to return to non-voting.
The past few years have been an explicit test of two theories of how to win back AfD voters: first, the CDU just needed to pivot to the hard right under Merz and second that the Linke as a party was too woke and needed to turn to workerist anti-migrant nationalism via BSW. Both failed.

The reason why Sanchez is such a target is not because his amnesty policy had anything to do with what happened in Ceuta. If anything, he is just as abhorrent when it comes to controlling irregular migration. It is because it shows that an alternative is possible wrt pathways to legal immigration.
