This area, random walks on groups, was super useful as a student. Turns out that one way to analyze these walks uses representations theory of non-abelian groups. And because they were practically minded they had to actually concretely construct irreps. Useful for understand quantum algorithms!

My guess was under six months, not because the result was easy or such, but because people are goddam smart, especially when they know there is an answer (the barrier of not knowing whether you are in the yes or no case is what makes research so god damn hard)
