I'm literally a professional crustacean scientist, but in motion this looks more like a @realgdt.bsky.social fantasy creature! Btw it's swimming butt-up. Paddles are back legs, long ones are front legs. Weird branched stuff is its food royalsocietypublishing.org/rspb/article...

Say hi to Praearcturus gigas. This Devonian arthropod from Britain's identity had been in dispute for ages, but a new study reinterpreted it as a giant scorpion. Though the fossil is fragmentary, the estimated size is about 1 meter long. This is one bug you want to ride into battle. #Art #SciArt

Did they? Gervilleioperna is in Aalenian Chile and in Brame et al. (2019) literally is quoted: "Rare lithiotids can still be found in the Toarcian of Morocco following the T-OAE (Bodin, personal observation)" (Tough @rowanmartindale.bsky.social can confirm if this last one was an error)

Lithiotid bivalves thrived following the Triassic-Jurassic extinction event, colonizing many coasts and producing huge build-ups similar to modern oyster reefs. They were strange and elongated clams, forming "banana bunch" like aggregations. Sadly they were wiped out in the Toarcian extinction (115)
