Yesterday's #InverteFest featured millipedes mating, today's is (at left) pond snails (cf. Novisuccinea ovalis) doing the same. Can you find the easter egg? 🐌

A large, soft bodied, drab brown insect, with prominent pincers and long antennae posed on a timber patio postalongsude a fast moving river. The pincers (mandibles) of females are stubby and are capable of inflicting a painful bite. The mandibles of males are very long, tusk-like, and incapable of hurting people due to lack of leverage.

Green mantidfly (Zeugomantispa sp.), side view. It looks like the front half of a tiny mantis on the back half of a lacewing. Its large eyes have a bright starlike pattern.

Garden Tiger moths, for I have been told it is #invertefest again. - Grey #Art #Bugs #Moth

A pair of Garden tiger moths (Arctia caja) as seen from the back. One is perched, one is launching into flight with hindwings exposed. The hindwings are a fiery orange with iridescent blue flashing patches. This is to warn predators that they are very toxic.

Colour and background details were aided by my partner's suggestions. Some details were reproduced from naturally deceased specimens in my collection.

Some extra details: These moths can be very bold and will sometimes grace outdoor lights or window panes at night. Their caterpillars can sometimes be attracted by foxglove plants. Adults will make noises if you upset them, the same response they use to warn bats.

Warning: Do not plant foxgloves where children or a pet could reach them, they are toxic. Do not unwisely pick up the caterpillars, they have irritating spines.

a set of 4 crab doodles. blueberry is a crab that looks like the bell-shaped blueberry flower hanging down, blowing bubbles that are just literal blueberries. plasma cutter is a mechanical box with safety goggles and two cable arms that end with plasma-emitting nozzles. mollusc is a hermit crab in coiled ammonite shell with paddle like legs. star is a star-shaped crab carapace with tiny claws and very long legs extending backwards like shooting star trails.

It's #Invertefest, and I haven't 🦀-posted for a bit, so... here's a decorator crab, trying very hard to look like the weed that it has stuck to its face. I *think* its a Halimeda Crab (Huenia heraldica) but I could be entirely wrong about that. #MarineLife 🌿 #Wildlife

A small green crab on an algae-covered rock surface. It holds its body erect and has a piece of weed stuck to its rostrum, which is significantly bigger than the crab itself.

a pair of gonopods, they’re difficult to describe with words. the base of each is thick, boxlike, and three branches sprout from them, arising from the inner surface of the boxes: the lowest and thinnest are simple thin spikes directed at angles outwards; behind them a taller, thicker column, crowned with a pincerlike arrangement of twisted spines splaying out to the side, the largest curved, broad, and spoonlike; and a third, stout spine stands up from about the middle of the boxlike structure. the side of the box facing the camera has a soft membrane with a sparse tuft of long bristles

a similar structure but the third spikes are thinner and straighter, and the complicated crowns of the second bit differs a little in the angles of the pieces

Starting off this #InverteFest with 3 Opiliones sightings! I think all 3 are Leiobunum spp with #2 being L. vittatum. #1 though is being parasitized by mites (red dots)! Just casually sucking the haemolymph near the base of the legs 🕷

Light brown harvestman with black legs, on my elbow. Tiny red dots at the limb bases are parasitic mites! It is maybe 0.5cm body length and 10 or more x in leg span.

Opiliones in a rock crevasse. It is orangey brown with a big black marking on the body, which is why I think it is Leiobunum vittatum. The pedipalps are outstretched.

hi #Invertefest, i drew some bugs from my yard

Kit had a difficult time choosing a treehopper for today's #Invertefest offering. So many choices. The diversity of appearance is related to the diversity of the environments in which they are found. Their bizarre "helmets" seem quite alien, but we find this little guy rather cute. #kdk1200
