I toted my new bike down the Natchez Trace Parkway to do some gravel riding in Lawrence County this past weekend. Tons of fun, but also exhausting.

New bike day! Kona Sutra for touring and gravel. What should I name her?

New WeGo reel opens with this scene, for which I used zero context to jump to the conclusion that they're starting a new high-capacity but super-slow water taxi service using barges.

Don't believe the plaque. This bench is not for reading on. It's for taking photos on, as evidenced by the 6 different groups of people who asked me to move while I was reading on this bench.

The Chestnut St "complete street" is breaking ground today. This particular intersection (at Trimble St) will have the roundabout removed and will be replaced with a 3-way stop. Certainly better than the situation before the tactical urbanism roundabout, but I'd prefer a hardened roundabout.

Also, if we can find an emergency $30 million or whatever for a property we have no idea what to do with just to stop something from happening, I think we should be able to find $30 million to print the curb and run those Toronto barriers everywhere to stop people dying on the streets.

Guessing that we can expect a new raised crosswalk next week on 4th Ave S at Symphony Pl!

O'Connell says Metro has a "legitimate need for this property" (next to zoo) then lists a few possibilities, not one specific use. And he doesn't identify why that particular property (other than the obvious). Metro has plenty of underutilized property already (like a dead mall).

Just in case anyone is curious, the cost of eminent domain is fair market value. Fair. Market. Value. We could have had a plan in place before we got to this point with a little bit of foresight. Instead the current suggestion is spending enough money to open 20 or so new daycares.

We were on our way to check out this new cafe/playground this morning, but we saw a huge pile of bubbles in front of the Inglewood library along the way. He didn't even have the right clothes on, just plunged right in. The cafe will have to wait until another time.

More like summer of raised crosswalks! 3rd Av at Symphony Pl/pedestrian bridge completed. John Lewis Wy (5th) at Bicentennial Mall greenway connector under construction. Anne Dallas Dudley Blvd at Church St and 4th Av at Symphony Pl coming down the pike, according to NDOT newsletter. We need more!

Summer of sidewalks is good marketing

Anybody missing an off-white (?) two-passenger longtail cargo bike, but still have the front wheel locked up? I saw some people wheeling it into an alley, holding the front fork. It may have been an Aventon, not sure of the brand. Alley b/t Sevier St and Electric Ave, going west off of 18th St.

4,000 miles on the e-bike odometer this morning on the way to an appointment!

The original east Nashville Spokes timeline. We’re too busy sitting on our hands, suing an inept federal administration, and reallocating our own Vision Zero dollars away from safety projects to do it our damn selves. NACTO Designing cities? More like NADA in Nashville.

I came along on Woodland on my bike maybe 15 minutes after this happened. It could have been me.

4pm on a Tuesday. On a street that we know is deadly, where we have been planning safety improvements since 2020. We've had finalized designs for Woodland that have been ready to build for 2 full years, but nothing has been done.

I don't need a bell on my bike. My 4-year-old passenger has recently taken to shouting at runners, "NO RUNNING!"

Richmond, VA has a pedestrian bridge suspended underneath a highway over the James River (1st pic). www.bridgemeister.com/pic.php?pid=... Why can't Nashville do the same over the Stones River underneath I-40 (2nd pic)? Aside from lack of political will & funding, are there engineering constraints?

Lytle Bend Park has more signage now! A few months ago, when there were only trail markers (which were sometimes difficult to follow), I did my best to map out the trail system on @openstreetmap.bsky.social. I'll have to go back soon for another hike. osm.org/go/ZQ09EDKq--

Lytle Bend Park is now open to the public! This former farm next to Ravenwood Park has signposted trails. For those arriving on the Stones River Greenway from East Nashville or Two Rivers, there's an entrance near the confluence of the Stones and Cumberland Rivers.

Nice surprise at the Percy Priest trailhead of the Stones River Greenway.

Scored a bunch of free bagels by being in the right place at the right time (Mr Aaron's Goods at closing time).

Lots of cyclists use Harrison St, which runs through this campus, as a low-traffic alternative to James Robertson Pkwy or Jefferson St. When I ride through, I can always smell when they're packing menthol products. (My son won't miss it; he always complains about that smell.)

Hoboken, NJ hasn't had a single roadway death in nearly a decade. It's not because Hobokenites have particularly good balance or never make mistakes. It's because the city leaders actually cared enough to make the changes to their streets that make them less dangerous, where mistakes aren't fatal.

People who stumble don’t deserve to die

Does Nashville have a porchfest? Seems like an obvious event for Music City. (Don't say Westhaven; I don't care to go there.) When I lived in Somerville, MA, I loved going to Porchfest every year. Chattanooga has at least 2: Highland Park and St Elmo.

Speaking of secret riverfront greenways, I found this 0.2 mile greenway last weekend almost directly across the river last weekend. It is open, though you have to go through the Modera Germantown apartment complex to get there. (And no actual river views)

Y’all there is this whole stunning riverfront greenway in River North that we aren’t allowed to use. It’s right outside the secret Shake Shack and the computer beer bar. Sitting here felt like being on vacation. Please don’t ruin it for me.

Parking garage as seen from the downtown Nashville library children's section. A few very crispy vehicles in there, but also 4 seemingly unharmed ones that can't get out due to the ramp being MIA.

My e-bike/kid hauler is also out of commission at the moment due to three (!) broken spokes. Been waiting on a new rear wheel to arrive for 15 days now.

Although I'd heard the state was having trouble with the Cleveland St extension into River North, I hadn't heard that they were moving forward with an alternative until Tuesday night. I took a look at that alternative: extending Marine Dr to Dickerson Pk. [thread] www.tdot.tn.gov/PublicDocume...

Since they never built that bridge, they really should've eliminated the center turn lane on the Demonbreun viaduct between 12th and 9th to widen the sidewalks. The 5 foot sidewalks there are way too narrow for the amount of pedestrian traffic that viaduct gets.

biased because I worked on this in another life, but not building the Gulch pedestrian bridge was quietly a “we don’t do big things* anymore” moment for Nashville *the Titans stadium is “an incredibly dumb thing” and therefore a different category
