Cuando me postulé a los programas doctorales en Estados Unidos lo hice con un ensayo sobre lírica popular al que le tenía poquísima fe. Por ese entonces yo era achichincle en la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua y conocí a Margit.
El viernes pasado falleció a sus 100 años Margit Frenk, maestra absoluta de literatura del Siglo de Oro y de cultura popular. No sé por dónde empezar, pero quiero hablar de ella. Pocas obras de investigación humanística tienen la trascendencia de su legado
Leer a Margit marcó un antes y un después. Su trabajo me hizo ver la poesía viva de todos los días y cambió por completo mi entendimiento de la literatura. No sé si hubiera seguido por el camino de las letras—que a ratos se sentía tan estéril y alejado del mundo—sin ella.
