Very happy to be coorganizing this panel at ICMS 2027, with Wiktoria Bryzys. Interested in the literary aljama beyond questions of representation, or in notions of medieval Iberian sociocultural autarky and interdependence, among related topics? Please submit yr abstract and join us at Kalamazoo!

Building on recent scholarship on medieval Iberia’s ethnoreligious communities, this session seeks to reimagine these groups as partial sovereigns within larger hegemonic powers. How did Iberian ethnic communities govern themselves internally, and how did aljamas, the dhimma system, and the administrative apparatus impact and become legible in literature, visual arts, and material culture? We invite papers spanning literary and historiographic works composed between the 8th and 17th centuries in all languages of Iberia and the Sephardic and Morisco diasporas that examine questions of mediation, coexistence, class hierarchies, and both intra- and interconfessional relations.

A year ago, my friend Alexandra Bellow died: a Romanian mathematician, former wife of Saul Bellow, and an extraordinary woman who was in love with Don Quixote until her very last day. I wrote this small tribute in the days just after her death. www.guernicamag.com/three-pages-...

Three Pages of Don Quixote

Here was a woman who had lived through a dictatorship, been through three marriages, and built a brilliant career in a relentlessly male-dominated field. And she was happy.
