Just in case you have time on your hands, and love the challenge of transcribing unreadable handwriting, and fancy contributing to completing the project of producing the collected works of Jeremy Bentham .... @transcribe-bentham.bsky.social
'Transcribe Bentham began in 2010, and another 20,000 or so manuscript pages require transcription. We’d like to invite your readers to help us complete the project and to explore the writings and correspondence of a figure of enormous historical importance.' #Skystorians

weird ad placement while reading about Foucault's interest in the panopticon
Thanks to Tal Brewer for giving me permission to post this prescient essay from 2002 on DBBB about the dangers of America going to war with Iraq. Link in the comments.
"When anyone asked him where he came from, he said, "I am a citizen of the world."" Diogenes Laertius, Life of Diogenes the Cynic.--Cynicism about politics would be more interesting if it stuck with the ancient, cosmopolitan version of the doctrine.
Canada is currently reviewing its Medical Assistance in Dying laws to determine whether people should be eligible who only have a mental illness. This is a response to Quinn Gibson’s arguments at DBBB last week. It can also be read as a stand-alone post. danielmoseley.substack.com/p/does-sever...
In this first guest post at DBBB: Quinn Gibson examines whether a person in the grip of severe depression can have the capacity to choose an medical aid in dying. open.substack.com/pub/danielmo...

These are shocking developments could destroy the legitimacy and practice of medical research in the U.S. The turn toward authoritarianism brings along war, loss of prosperity (an "affordability crisis"), and the erosion of scientific research. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

My problem with the White House thunderdome isn’t that it’s “vulgar,” or “tacky,” qualities I often enjoy & terms which are often crudely classist when used pejoratively. My problem, as always, is the fascism. Don’t get distracted by taste, which is deeply subjective; it’s the fascism.
Haven’t heard the expression ‘police state’ for a while. Here’s the Wikipedia definition.

I wonder if the Bayesian turn in analytic philosophy (e.g., formal epistemology, etc.) is largely due to a broader societal factor: widespread compulsive gambling. #philsky
With massive cuts to Medicaid on the horizon, a new study underscores the potentially life-and-death urgency of helping people with opioid use disorder retain their coverage. https://ow.ly/1CWV50YZNhU
This is such incredible bullshit. I am alive, thriving, and writing books on health policy/politics thanks to antidepressants. Antidepressants aren't for everyone, but they can be literal lifesavers. Attacking their prescribing & use is stigmatizing and dangerous. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/04/s...

With Trump now explicitly threatening to leave NATO and the Iran war opening Russian oil to the world, Putin never had a better ally than Trump.
The “Trump is a Russian asset” hypothesis is looking more plausible every day. A more interesting question is how would things be different if he was not a Russian asset.

I still have the PS2 that I purchased when it rolled out, and it still works!!
SONY PlayStation 2 released 25 years ago today, October 26th 2000 in North America. What else can I say other than the PS2 is one of the greatest and most important consoles in the history of video games. There's simply no debating that. The PS2 is legendary. Period.
Lotta folks here at No Kings, Orange County NC. Lots of American flags, a fellow in an inflatable dino costume asking everyone if they've read the Declaration of Independence and handing out copies. No kings in North Carolina.
