We all cope with this with stuff like "there's citizen journalism, substacks and influencers that'll replace what publications that are no longer profitable used to do" but the harder it becomes to easily find out about new music and the cultures that drive it the fewer music fans we'll have.

Bollywood is a big blind spot for me. Anyone have good recs on: 1. The best streaming service for classic Bollywood (whatever that may mean) 2. The best AFI-type list of the best Bollywood films of all time (book or otherwise, if it has a historical overview even better!) Thanks for any help!

There was a window in my 20s where I considered writing a proposal for Bad Religion’s Suffer. Type O Negative’s October Rust also feels like it would just flow out of me. It would be tempting to write about Spanish-language music too, maybe a Colombian classic like El Dorado by Aterciopelados.

Flashing back to summer camp thirtysomething years ago when a counselor did a faux-serious reading of the lyrics to Beck's "Loser" at a talent show, but he didn't realize that part of the chorus was in Spanish and kept saying "soy on head the door" instead of "soy un perdedor."

used to not be about money, and the rich losers decided that wasn't fair so now they get everything and think it makes them cool. let them think that and save your money. none of that stuff that used to mean something means anything anymore.

This is probably more annoying to me than most other people because I am from there, but I hate when a band or famous person is described as being from Long Island without any further specifics. It's a lengthy place! It's right there in the name! Just saying they are from Long Island is too vague.

Wore out my cassette copy of 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of... It all started with an obsession over this anthem about a homeless guy who's smarter than anyone realizes. A year or two later I realized that this group went from critical heroes to zeroes at warp speed for whatever reason.

Jimmy Buffett's "He Went to Paris" is an all-timer country song for me, with relatable lyrics on an almost painfully personal level. Until the last line, where he sings "Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic / But I had a good life all the way" and it nearly negates everything before it.

This is going to sound like the most old fogey opinion but the jazz-rock stylings of pre-“If You Leave Me Now” Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears are maybe the two most underrated artists when it comes to rock and roll hagiography. I highly suggest a revisit if you have them pegged as uncool oldies.

Candlebox gets a lot of grief for supposedly being a hair metal band that just wore a grunge costume in a mercenary way. But revisiting the self-titled album recently I have to admit it kinda kicked ass. The singles are all great. Love this for the Mountain Goats, real manifestation energy.

120 Minutes was on past my bedtime, so I’d tape it to watch the next afternoon after school. At one point they had a “best of” episode where they played the show’s most iconic videos and it was so good I couldn’t bear to tape over it. I’d throw it on sometimes as I did my homework. RIP Dave Kendall.
