The local factors that stabilize the self-organization of plant holobionts are not well understood. We show that nematodes and their associated phages govern holobiont assembly, enhancing resistance to pathogens depending on plant-specific soil legacy. doi 10.64898/2026.07.02.736003 #plantsci

Here's our first concrete example on how microbial markers can be used in resistance #PlantBreeding. Main idea: many diseases are not single-pathogen problems, and breeding/diagnostics may benefit from looking at microbial key taxa (incl. beneficials), not only visual disease scores. #Microbiome

A message for every biologist, especially those not studying microbes. We must advance frameworks that are built on the true foundation that microorganisms are part of every cellular assemblage. Holobiont biology indisputably adds that lexicon and fundamental dimension to the visible world.

Chen et al. in the Lin Lab at Fujian Normal University reveal that nematodes and arthropods in rice–wheat agroecosystems exhibit divergent biogeographic patterns, with nematode richness peaking at the regional center and arthropods forming fragmented hotspots.
