I came just a few feet from El Diego on just one occasion, but what an occasion it was - the unforgettable 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, Liverpool vs AC Milan. Here is the photo I took of Maradona that night, I think on my blackberry phone. 💔⚽️🇦🇷

💔⚽️RIP Franco Baresi, truly one of the best to play the game. Captain of an all-time great AC Milan side for one of history’s most interesting but forgotten matches, the 1989 Intercontinental Cup against Colombia’s Atlético Nacional in Tokyo, a story told in my book Narcoball.

Can’t believe Luis Díaz will see what has happened with Jhon Durán and have anything to do with the Saudi Pro League. Meanwhile I’m shocked no one has swooped for Davinson Sánchez or Jhon Lucumí yet. Lucumí would be ideal for Liverpool actually but he’s not homegrown. ❤️⚽️🇨🇴

Not seen a single Colombia player in any of the World Cup teams of the tournament floating around, official or otherwise. Los Cafeteros conceded 1 goal in 5 games. For me, Davinson Sánchez and Jhon Lucumí were both immense and deserve to at least be in that conversation. ❤️⚽️🇨🇴

Today is Colombian Independence Day. For those who don’t know, I’m half Colombian & it was my love of my motherland, the festering teenage trauma of USA ‘94 & the murder of Andrés Escobar that led to my first book Narcoball: Love, Death & Football in Escobar’s Colombia. ❤️🇨🇴
