jumping in late, but what i recall from my time at bear before the crash was that the mortgage market was worth $11T and the CDS market was worth $66T hearing it framed that way scared tf out of me as a kid back then it also makes plain Tankus's point about the magnitude diff from 2008

I get why layman make this argument but it doesn't hold together because there are now structural understanding of all the interconnections and we know why a liquidity crisis happened. There is no similar institutions or relationships to produce that now (from AI-LLM data center financing).

"LLM output isn't allowed in public docs, PR descriptions, or Github comments unless it's clearly marked; reviewers aren't required to look at LLM PRs if they don't want to." this is the way to go. I mark LLM addenda to PRs and comments with a 🤖 and their own heading or collapse under <details>

New York City’s business elites are long accustomed to direct access to City Hall, where even Democratic mayors felt the need to court the city’s wealthiest and most influential corporate leaders. That access is getting shredded by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani Is Shunning New York Business Leaders Who Are Used to Calling the Shots

The mayor fired corporate leaders from a city fund’s advisory board in the latest sign that he is changing the way such power brokers access City Hall.

“Michigan is a hotbed of resistance to renewable energy projects. A 2025 review ranks it as the state with the largest number of local restrictions: More than 60 local governments in Michigan passed ordinances, moratoriums, or other restrictions on wind and solar development between 2011 and 2024.”

Yet another (popular) article on human/LM reasoning that (as usual) I'm deeply disappointed to see casually presupposes that humans do something called "reasoning" that's implied to be linking together steps that logically follow without any qualification, then proceeds to be dismissive 1/

"Reasoning comes in many technically defined forms(opens a new tab), but the basic procedure is easily recognizable: arriving at a sound conclusion by linking together intermediate steps that logically follow from each other. We do this with thoughts; LRMs use so-called chains of thought [...]" from https://www.quantamagazine.org/is-ai-reasoning-right-for-the-wrong-reasons-20260731/

🚨 Update: Watching this npm worm propagate in real time, we’re now tracking 2,234 affected package artifacts across 444 unique packages, and it’s still spreading. Average detection time: 5 min and 18 seconds after publication. Our campaign page includes all affected packages/versions.

🚨 Active npm supply chain attack: keyv@6.0.0 and 13 other packages have been compromised. keyv alone gets 154M weekly downloads. The worm steals cloud and CI credentials, then uses stolen npm tokens to publish trojanized versions of more packages.

“The real story is more like: ‘cybernetics was an attempt to solve technical questions and ended up raising a lot of philosophical questions.’ This, unsurprisingly, means that it tends to get cleaved in half along the divide of what CP Snow called the Two Cultures.”

nice, textured thread about AI and math. however I think it is risky to say such capability is unlikely to occur and the reason given is a classic bad one. it’s not obvious that the internal representations used by LLMs during mathematical reasoning are symbolic in a way human thought is not

Steve Huntsman@stevehuntsman.bsky.social · last wk.

But such capability is unlikely to occur, and I think it may be an AGI-complete capability. It requires actually reasoning with internal representations that are not manifestly best described as symbolic, as humans do. Venkatesh says math is the study of mentally reproducible structures… /6
