With THE NINTH JEDI, Disney+ now how its first full anime series, and yet Disney+ still remains the worst streaming service bar none for handing subtitles for non-English language material. This shouldn’t be hard! It’s maddening and embarrassing that they can’t get this right.

BRAND NEW DAY is the best Spider-Man movie since SPIDER-MAN 2, and the first to seriously engage with the character of Peter Parker since SPIDER-MAN 3. It also inescapably lives in SPIDER-MAN 2’s shadow to the point where one particularly emotional scene was clearly temp scored with Elfman’s themes.
Rope-dropped Universal to ride the new Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift. Very fun coaster, but definitely feels like an overcorrection from Supercharged. Totally exists outside the narrative of the films, and the only character appearance is Vin Diesel’s likeness in the load station mural.
Metro has some of the lowest transit fairs in the country. $3.50 for a round trip is nothing. The problem is all of Metro’s attempts to expand get endlessly delayed by frustrating red tape and kowtowing to NIMBYs.
Tell me you don't understand public transit without telling me you don't understand public transit. The small fee isn't the issue, the issue is the LA Metro doesn't cover nearly enough of Los Angeles. Expand coverage first, lower fares later. K and D line expansion can't come soon enough.
After kinda feeling like it got lost up its own ass the last two seasons, it’s really great to see THE BEAR land its final run.

Reason number 86,572 why people in media need to get off of (or at least be way more skeptical of) X. Astroturfed racism artificially boosted by Elon’s openly white supremacist algorithm is not a “hysteria”. It’s fake. Be serious.
There was no hysteria. People just fucking suck.
There’s a threshold in understanding when it comes to Roblox where you move from, “oh neat! A platform where kids can make games and learn dev tools,” to, “this is the most malignant evil man has ever fashioned. If there is a just God, everyone involved in its creation should be eternally damned.”
I repeat. Roblox is the worst thing that's happened to the video game industry.
Anyway, the best part of last night’s live read—and maybe of this series of live reads in their entirety—was watching Vic Michaelis, who had clearly not seen these movies, discover in real time that Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter.
An odd synchronicity between seeing the RISE OF SKYWALKER live read last night followed by arriving at @blastpoints.bsky.social’s episode on the film’s art book this morning has me thinking a lot about how, in some ways, J.J. Abrams is kind of the mirror image of George Lucas as a filmmaker.

With EVIL DEAD BURN in theaters I have seen a lot of discourse about “unofficial” EVIL DEAD films and want to remind everyone Sam Raimi even made one and it’s pretty good.
Saw SLEEPING BEAUTY on 70mm today and had something of a spiritual experience with it.
A review of Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Sleeping Beauty is probably the apex of the Golden Age of Disney animation. A staggering artistic achievement so enormous that it lost money despite being one of the biggest earners of 1959. It’s the ...

I think MOANA underperforming pretty definitively proves there’s, like, exactly a 14 year window of movies that are primed for millennial nostalgia, and anything older or newer than that is gonna flop. The problem for Disney is they’re rapidly running out of those.
Got a feature on DISCLOSURE DAY coming in the next issue of Camera Operator and I'm really excited about it. Spoiler: Spielberg is all-in on drones now.
There's this very frustrating double standard in online discourse where people complain about art that's too corporate and grey, but also if any artist has a distinct, recognizable voice, it's cringe.
It's a feature, not a bug. Artists having distinct quirks unique to how they approach their medium is GOOD, ACTUALLY. Spielberg and his obsession with mirrors / reflections / eyes, Raimi with his carnival barker sense of humor, LMM's rhyming and meter, John Williams' obsession with leit motifs, etc.
I definitely fell down on the side of, "not for me, thanks" with EVIL DEAD BURN, but I appreciate @philnobilejr.bsky.social's perspective here that the slapstick element of the original film has perhaps become more emphasized in hindsight thanks to Raimi's subsequent films.
Looks like EVIL DEAD BURN will be hugely divisive, a mean-spirited line-crosser in a franchise that, as @philnobilejr.bsky.social points out in today's @fangoria.bsky.social Terror Teletype, has become comfort food to many a horror fan. 1/2 manage.kmail-lists.com/subscription...
Another day, another heavy sigh of existential weariness.
this is the wooooooooooorst
Alas, I kind of hated it. Throwing studio money behind a series of anthology horror flicks should be a winning idea, but when it forces movies that fundamentally want to be something different to begrudgingly do half-assed Evil Dead fan service, it sucks on both ends.
I’m seeing EVIL DEAD BURN tonight, but I feel like almost under duress. I hope it surprises me, but yeah, I wish these remembered their legacy is rooted in slapstick horror-comedy.
Gonna buy a single share of stock in the Walt Disney Company so I can be the guy who calls into every shareholder meeting and asks Josh D’Amaro when he plans to release THE ACOLYTE on Blu-ray.

it's my biggest beef with what the Evil Dead franchise seems to be evolving into: joyless exercises in suffering. Bruce Campbell said their prime directive was "the gore the merrier," they're forgetting the 'merrier' bit. and I don't think you have to rip off Raimi to make these movies fun again.
The best product that Apple discontinued is the iPad Smart Keyboard Folio case. The Magic Keyboard is fine if you want to essentially convert your iPad into a laptop, but being able to flip the keyboard fully around and still use it like a tablet is way better.
Somehow Rick McCallum returned (complimentary)
The rumors were true....
LOL he actually said "quality over quantity" but who cares, it's just words, you can put them in any order.
funny how the cutting edge of the far right is just regurgitated slaveholder agitprop from 1850.
