I love BayWheels so much, like this would be 35-40 minutes of my life every single day walking to and from Bart and instead if I e-bike both ways - 10 minutes total. That’s more time in the morning and evening with my kids, less time that my partner has to be solo, more she can sleep in, etc etc.

Right, "we don't need to redesign our streets, we just need to enforce the laws" is code for "I don't really want to think about this and I certainly don't want to change anything about how I drive, and if nothing at all changed, well that's certainly better me having to change in any way."

Right. By all means, PLEASE ticket drivers for phone use. But, among other problems with in-person enforcement, cops can't be deployed everywhere 24/7. That suggests a host of other solutions — such as design changes, automated enforcement, etc. — are needed and, yes, probably better.

When will we know we have Democratic leadership worthy of the name? When they can say “yeah, Uncommitted did the right the right thing, the way they were treated and talked about was stupid and awful, and we should be grateful to them for being a part of our party.”

Uncommitted did the inside outside strategy that liberals claim to worship to a T and will never be forgiven. There is unfortunately a pretty perverse lesson in there.

Hi everyone, it’s me, your local neighborhood convicted arsonist. Please enjoy my speech about the evils of sprinkler systems, and the mean mean people who advocate for them.

I actually really like the idea of municipal grocery stores - I don’t think this is a good way to do it but I’m grateful to Mamdani for putting it into practice and letting the rest of see what happens. Hope it works and is replicable without too many unintended consequences.

At our municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.

Mayor Mamdani holds up bananas with a 30% off sticker on them.

I was told yesterday that I was “so selfish” by an anti- bike lane person when I told them there was no room for compromise. To which I say - hell yes I am selfish on this one, and I will be selfish on this one every day of my life. Because this isn’t happening to my kid or any other kid in my town

Sharrows and door zone bike lanes, even narrower than the one that resulted in the dooring death of 4 year old Maia Correia in 2023. Oakland is building a protected bikeway there right now, to eliminate this danger going forward. oaklandside.org/2025/07/25/l...

Working on a little chat bot to make it easy to look up information and stats on development projects, and I asked Claude to make a little consent modal for logging chat content, and just on its own it used this sketchy dark pattern. Not super cool Claude!

Modal asking for consent to log chat information that uses a dark pattern to get you to click consent.

Get rid of your imposter syndrome (which tends to afflict smart people more than dumb people anyway). NO ONE is a "real expert." You have every right to be there. And you can make an enormous difference if you're in the room at the right time. Get involved. Participate. You can matter.

“We have spent decades insisting that every department needs a custom-engineered apparatus. Custom pump configurations, custom cab heights, custom body layouts, custom compartmentation, custom paint…NFPA 1901 compounds the problem. Every revision cycle adds requirements…”

Fire Apparatus Costs Are a Procurement Problem, Not Just a Pricing Problem

Earlier this month, the IAFF published a detailed account of the fire apparatus crisis, covering the lawsuits filed by Los Angeles County and Milwaukee, the antitrust investigation launched by Texas, ...

+1000 to this. It’s easy to be cynical and distrusting when you hear“we want new housing hit not big ugly boxes” but a lot of people really do mean it. Defanging that opposition vector by legalizing beautiful buildings will go a loooong way towards creating durable local pro-housing politics.

California YIMBY@cayimby.bsky.social · last mo.

CA YIMBY's Eduardo Mendoza argues ugly buildings turn housing-neutral voters into opponents, and the fix isn't more design review. Objective standards targeting coherent style, real materials, and street trees can make beautiful housing the by-right default. cayimby.org/blog/buildin...
