Last night we went to see The Odyssey and as we came out a bloke was saying loudly to a woman ‘Yes but IN THE BOOK it doesn’t happen like that’ and he did a sneaky look round to see how many people heard him say he’d read it.
My Jimmy Cricket story. Went to uni with a guy from NI. Someone told me he’d had a clattering at football - the next day I said ‘How’s your ankle?’ He replied (panicked) ‘My uncle? Who told you about my uncle?’ Turns out he was Jimmy Crickets nephew and had been hiding it. He shouldn’t have, obvs. 🩷
My back isn’t any better. I’m ok standing up but sitting is agony. Good job I bought those tickets last week - for a showing tonight of that 3 hour film you’re all on about.
Watching the 1976 version of A Star is Born and it’s definitely, in the words of @mysteriosox.bsky.social #filmsyoucansmell
Had a few of my/my daughter’s friends round last night for drinks in the garden as a belated 18th. Spend days prepping the decorations, drinks selection, buffet, cleaning the patio. Then just as I stepped out of the shower 30 mins before everyone was due to arrive, my back went into spasm.
Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep: Reunited in Larkin’s ‘This Be The Verse’ (They fuck you up, your Mum and Dad).
Studio execs are going to want to adapt more poems for the big screen now
Had to give in and take one of my stronger pain meds. Just as I swallowed it I remembered I’m due to chair a meeting in 20 mins. So, just as they’re hitting.

The first time my daughter heard ‘Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me’ I thought she would combust from laughing so much. RIP Bill.

I’ve always hated aniseed but since finding out it’s the only flavour Gaviscon that really works, I can now tolerate it. This has led to me deciding I quite like Sambuca…
Was just about to post ‘Guess who’s in a flat roof murder pub?’ then a fight broke out, followed by a lass having a seizure in the beer garden. However, the band kept playing Highway to Hell throughout, so there’s that. *lass is ok.
I met a group of women in my early 40’s who have become a massive part of my life. We go away a couple of times a year for weekends and had a big holiday last summer. We meet about once a month for drinks/lunch. One of them has just sent this (I think by Cecilia Jennae?) and it’s made me cry.
Thanks to social media, I felt mucky when buying an aubergine today. 🍆
The world is turning to shit but I genuinely love the way that off-beat things catch on and give us moments of joy - throwing competitions between naan breads and baguettes, a raccoon with short spine syndrome, Macca facetiming Ringo, Andrew Tate having a cell next to a cannibal…
So Johnny Depp is older than Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, but is playing him in an origins film. 🤷🏻♀️
First poster for ‘EBENEZER’, a new film based on ‘A Christmas Carol’ starring Johnny Depp. “Before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer”
Another news alert, another populist promise from the new PM. He’s at this stage of office:
In the office. Thoughts and prayers to whoever was just in Trap 2 of the ladies loo. That did not sound healthy.
‘It’s a Small World’ from the Disney ride of the same name. IYKYK. Or that ‘Barney the Dinosaur’ one about raindrops. 😩
What song did the Sirens sing in The Odyssey? Wrong answers only.
As today is the day for honouring our ‘BlueSky sponsors’ - Hats off to @oddthisday.bsky.social who DM’d me with an invite code. I was sat on a beach in Pineda, drinking a large rum at the time. It gave me the kick I needed to ditch the other place - very grateful for that!
Tomorrow is "Shoutout the Person Who Gave You a Bluesky Invite Code" Day. It was a cool time for cool people to drag other cool people here.
I am delighted to announce I have met the Prime Minister this afternoon and accepted a position as Minister for Always Having a Tissue, a Plaster, and a Couple of Rennies Handy. I will do my best to serve the nation in this challenging role. Let’s get to work!
The way he’s moving about uncomfortably in this suit is very Norman Wisdom.
I messaged my daughter to see how she is this morning and she’s floated the idea of Muppets Oliver (the musical). But if you cast Miss Piggy as Nancy you’d have to have Kermit as Bill Sykes and that wouldn’t work. And they wouldn’t work in any of the other couple roles either. A right conundrum.
What’s your World Cup halftime show fantasy line up? Mine’s: Sly Fox Freeez Owen Paul Showaddywaddy The fella who sang ‘Mule Train’ whilst hitting himself with a tin tray Nile Rodgers
Today is my daughter’s 18th. She is in Denmark at International Scout Jamboree. She rang first thing, and done up in a sash and badges with balloons adoring her tent. She’s having a BLAST. I’m a big blubbering mess so Steve and I are off to London to see a show as a distraction.

Got to be Hideaway by De’Lacy for me.
Just saw Andy Burnham do some dad dancing to True Faith, which begs the important Q: which C20th anthem would *you* do some embarrassing dancing to if you were suddenly the unelected PM? Mine is probs Deceptacon by Le Tigre (also 1 of roughly 10,000 reasons I would never be PM).
