A future with this every summer is not inevitable. We have knowledge, technology, and pathways that can be leveraged. We can reduce emissions. Yes lower your footprint, but also write your representative about your swampy summer and ask them to make a change so you don't have to buy that AC.

Western Europe had its hottest June on record.🔥 Intense heatwaves broke temperature records, with peaks up to 9°C above average in France and Germany, according to Copernicus data. Only Cyprus and Malta had normal temperatures. Climate change is here and we are feeling its effects

Map of Europe showing average surface air temperature anomalies for 18–30 June 2026 compared with the 1991–2020 average. Large areas of Western and Central Europe, particularly France, Germany, Benelux, northern Italy and surrounding regions, are shaded dark red, indicating temperatures up to 9°C above average. Lighter orange and yellow shades show smaller positive anomalies across much of the rest of Europe. A colour scale at the bottom ranges from -9°C (dark blue) to +9°C (dark red). The map includes Copernicus Climate Change Service and European Union logos.

This month I have discovered two super important meeting that I have apparently been skipping for the last two years, that I did not even know I was supposed to join. I think there needs to be some kind of cheatsheet or something handed to new faculty (or a greater use of calendar invites)

Hey team - it’s looking very likely that I’ll be hiring not one but two four year postdocs! We’re a fun lab with tons of theoretical and applied pop gen projects - broadly in polyploid, conservation, and human evo. Competitive salary, sunny San Diego! Do share with your about to defend grads!

Excited to be here at #SMBE2026! I’ll be talking Wednesday afternoon about our @sgn.one #conservationgenomics #popgen research investigating genetic diversity erosion & mutational load in the endangered Great Bustard using museum genomics 🧬

ERGA member Paige Byerly @paigebyerly.bsky.social will present @official-smbe.bsky.social July 1 in session "S05 – Molecular Evolution in the Era of Genetic Diversity Decline" #SMBE2026

I am heading up to Copenhagen from Frankfurt for #SMBE, while theoretically a very simple 10 hour trip, the [catastrophic] heat wave caused by man made climate change is making this very challenging. Today we have already had fires on the line, signal failures, and I am not even in Hamburg yet!

If you're going to #SMBE2026 @official-smbe.bsky.social Copenhagen by train, share your plans and experience on #NoFlySMBE. Let's make #NoFlyAcademics normal and visible! I'm going Lausanne-Basel, night train 😴 Basel-Hamburg, and finally Hamburg-Copenhagen. Easy! (I hope 🤞)

Are you going to #SMBE2026 Copenhagen by train, or are you hesitating? Let's share experiences and give ideas to those who think to fly from Western or Central Europe with the hashtag #NoFlySMBE. If you're coming from 🇨🇭, there are night trains from Zürich or Basel to Hamburg. ✅🚆 ❌✈️

🧪 Big things are happening 🧪 after nearly two years at Senckenberg, the GBM team are moving into our wet lab space. This is a huge step for us as it means we now have a place to generate all the amazing molecular data we need to answer cool conservation questions. 🦁🦜🐈 #newPI #womeninSTEM
