i absolutely agree that open source communities have historically had a habit of coupling technical participation with adhering to an often unspoken cultural context. i think this is a problem, but i also don’t know if it’s possible to avoid; it’s part of the nature of *communities*.

yeah, this. there are plenty of reasons people direct their anger at llms which front as concrete concerns (copyright, climate, economy, other) but are, in actuality, existential dread. that dread is not unfounded, but i wish more people would just be up-front about why they’re angry.

Oh, and to be clear: you should probably be mad as hell, nearly all the time, about climate. But if you’re mad at LLMs before you’re mad at cars or meat or urban sprawl, you’re simply mad at the wrong thing.

There are many things to critique about AI. But I think treating it as uniquely evil, and not just a continuation of technological innovation, gives it power it does not deserve. And it delegitimizes real, harder critiques when we seem to be grasping for reasons to hate it.
