A honey mushroom perhaps? #fungifriends

A honey mushroom is in front of a fallen log, and the sun is shining through the trees above 💞

A flush of oysters methinks? I couldn’t get a picture of the underside. #fungifriends

Some cool mushrooms for my #fungifriends

A young red-belted polypore or conk of some kind with some major guttation! #fungifriends

Closeup of the fungus with lots of guttation- looks like raindrops or sweat! This bracket or shelf fungus grows for years on both living and dead conifer trees. Its annual growth creates distinctive rings or ridges, with a bright red or orange band separating the old layers from the current growth. Red-belted conk is only a danger to living trees if it colonizes a very deep cut or broken top.

Some Orange Spine mushrooms it seems? #fungifriends

The orange spine is a fungus commonly used for mushroom dyeing – it gives greyish and greenish dyes. At first glance, this mushroom resembles a polypore (large mushrooms that have tubes on their undersides), but when you take a closer look, you'll see that the underside of this polypore-looking mushroom is covered with tiny needles.

Orange spine tends to grow in coniferous forest settings, often favored by pine, hemlock, and fir trees, located in areas rich with needle duff.

My first time ever seeing Blue Tooth mushrooms?!! First blue mushroom for me period, actually! #fungifriends

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the blue Tooth fungus is its unpleasant, mealy odor. Named after the distinctive blue color of its fruit body, Blue Tooth loses its coloration as it ages. The fungus contains several pigments which can be used for dyeing wool and other fabrics.

Some Shaggy Manes getting ready to turn to ink #fungifriends

The shaggy mane mushroom is commonly found in North American and European grasslands. Some peoples foraged for its young egg-shaped caps, but it has more recently been found to be a bioaccumulator of heavy metals, meaning it pulls toxic metals up from the soil where it grows. As a result, shaggy manes should not be eaten. The mushrooms usually appear in clusters or “fairy rings.”

“The Twana name of this point from the Skokomish Tribe is duxʷ’axa∙′dač, meaning the place that is like an arm. ‘Misery Point’ likely took its name from the smallpox epidemic that devastated Native American tribes in the 19th century.“

My dahlia overwintered and bloomed again! It was here before I was so I’m not sure how many years it’s been around. Sure is pretty!

Did I find pinesap (Monotropa hypopitys)? #fungifriends

About a dozen thin, pinkish stalks of pinesap, “a mycotrophic plant which means it obtains nutrients and fixed carbon by parasitizing the mycorrhizal networks of trees. It lacks chlorophyll and does not photosynthesize” Wikipedia.

Ok, help me out—are these puffballs or sunshine amanitas emerging? 🤔 someone has been munching on them. #fungifriends

These mushrooms look like little loaves of bread to me

You can see a slug or something had taken a bite out of this one. It’s kind of orange underneath

Side view of some more bites that have been taken out and a little bit of the stem that’s buried underground

This one is just beginning to emerge. It makes me think puffball because it doesn’t look like there’s been any amanita egg

Did I finally find waxcaps and a tiny little parrot?! If so, there were tons of them today! #fungifriends

Throwback to last month’s bird’s nest fungi 🪺🤩 I can’t get over how tiny they are.

Top view two tiny birds nest fungi on a small branch surrounded by moss—tiny spore “eggs” are in both of them

I couldn’t make it out today so a lil throwback to last time. I love this tree just doin its thing.

A hiking path through the woods—on the right is a very interesting tree that I can’t tell if it’s the roots that are six feet in the air for some reason? Or if they’re branches reaching to the ground.

A gorgeous day along the Hood Canal

Many shades of blue- blue/grey rocks in the beachy foreground, blue water, blue mountains, and blue sky! The sun is bright with some wispy clouds.

Some yellow-tipped coral mushroom, perhaps. #fungifriends

Yellow-tipped coral(Ramaria formosa) is a pinkish, much-branched coral fungus known for its distinct appearance and many colorful varieties. It has been reported to cause gastrointestinal distress in some people, and so consumption is strongly discouraged. Older specimens may become brittle and chalk-like. The yellow-tipped coral is a woodland mushroom associated with conifers and deciduous trees. They exist in a symbiotic relationship with a tree’s roots, helping it absorb water and nutrients while the tree provides them with sugars and amino acids.

A grey coral mushroom, methinks. #fungifriends

Gray coral has an iconic coral-like appearance that grows up to 4 in tall. Its epithet cinerea denotes its smoky silvery appearance. Its purple and silvery hue is considered rare. This mushroom grows alongside conifer and deciduous trees and has a slightly mouldy odor. Gray coral thrives in mixed woods, notably below hardwoods and conifers, where there is plentiful leaf litter.

Maybe a Smith’s amanita? I’ve never run across an amanita this white. Very toxic. Not for munching on! #fungifriends #mushrooms

“Smith's amanita is characterized by its nephrotoxic properties. It thrives in moist environments, predominantly in autumn/fall. Distinctly recognized by its white cap and stem, smith's amanita is highly toxic and can lead to kidney damage if consumed. Its morphological similarities to non-toxic species make it a dangerous misidentification for foragers.” -Picture Mushroom app

First time running across a white Elfin saddle! #fungifriends #mushrooms

Closeup of a white elfin saddle mushroom surrounded by pine needles and a little green plant of some kind. “The western elfin saddle (Helvella vespertina) has a striking, brain-shaped cap that becomes even more fissured as it ages. They appear and flourish amidst the leaf litter on forest floors in the western United States. The shape of the cap makes it a wonderful hiding place for insects, especially millipedes.” -Picture Mushroom app

The stream at Dash Point state park was flowing beautifully the other day after so much rain!

If I’m correct, this one is called Trembling merulius or jelly rot fungus. Apparently some compare it to the rind of bacon, but I wouldn’t eat these ones! #fungifriends #mushrooms

Layers of white mushroom similar to turkey tail stacked on top of each other, growing out of a log and surrounded by fallen green and yellow leaves. “Trembling merulius(Phlebia tremellosa) is a common wood-decaying fungus found on many varieties of hardwood. Despite its Dutch common name, which references this species' appearance by comparing it to a rind of bacon, this fungus is held to be inedible.” -Picture Mushroom app
