Bill Maher makes more money when more people pay attention to him, so anyone who expects anything besides a pretend Boomer sensibility will obviously be disappointed. I like his guests and his show is consistently the only good thing on MAX besides John Oliver.

Node, React, Python, Elixir/Ash. Bay Area. terris.com/cv Was able to write working software before 2025 with my bare hands.
Nontechnical folks can now make software and I applaud them. They have no idea what is happening and frankly those of us who are in the middle of this transformation don’t know much better, either.
I believe in standups if it means talking to real users.
It’s still important to know how to talk to people at work who don’t do what you do.
Local first doesn’t do a great job of addressing data security
Elixir is that person you didn’t talk to at work until your going away lunch
My app is sufficiently robust for an agentic loop (codex) to modify it according to high-level instructions. This is how Anthropic builds their applications. With high-level abstractions like the BEAM and Ash, it’s easier for AI to build faster with less spaghetti and fewer bugs.
The major labels decided a long time ago to only make video game replays. A lot of noise, flashing lights, and death. The games themselves suck. The dialogue is purely tactical. Let the slop houses consolidate into one entity that eventually goes bankrupt. Film will go on.

Underneath solar panels, plants grew much more and used less water, "Chiltepin pepper plants produced three times as much fruit as those grown in full sun. Jalapenos matched their usual harvest while using 65 percent less water. Tomatoes grown under the array came in at twice the normal yield."

MCP 2.0 simonwillison.net/2026/Jul/31/...
Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest (and inspired mcp-explorer and datasette-mcp)
Tuesday was Stateless MCP day—the rollout of MCP 2.0, or the 2026-07-28 Model Context Protocol specification to use the more formal but less memorable name. This is the most significant …

I have yet to find a scenario in which event sourcing isn’t the optimal solution.
Want to compare two large git branches? Codex sol does an amazing job in a minute.. much better than most humans could do in a day.

When AI assistants are leveraged for good, we can do seemingly silly things that promote mental health, like adding a PASSED banner at the end of E2E tests, that we would never have the time and probably neither the skills for.
This is the second most important technical non-technical talk I know. A real tour de force. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLZw...

The terra firma architecture: 1. Elixir / BEAM / OTP 2. Elixir Usage Rules 3. Ash Framework (for Elixir) with Ash AI Ash TypeScript and Ash Lua 4. Jido framework for Elixir 5. Oban for Elixir and Ash Oban 6. PythonX because everyone must leverage Python in this market either for LLMs or analytics
When startups are focused on the customer as well as survival, performance reviews are thrown overboard as ballast, proving their value.
Enforcing consistency rules in the frontend without checking them in the backend results in invalid data. We usually lack the tools to do better the first time. Ash validations are how you defend your model against misuse on day 1 without writing spaghetti. ash.hexdocs.pm/validations....
