How important are levels in a ttrpg? I've always felt that instead of acting as a treat of progression, it felt like being gated off from stuff that sounds fun. I don't particularly care about getting a +1 to a stat because the nature of RNG exists. But then what about progression? 1/?

Bouncing off this, in a different life, I went to a games convention as a rep for a now defunct blog. In it was a session with the CEO from CCP, the guys who made EVE Online. He detailed a giant map in their version of space and how real-world enmity had translated in to online all-out warfare.

What's the deal with games needing monsters you can kill with no remorse? I keep seeing TTRPGs touting this in their marketing ... There was Obojima, a while back; now Deathbringer with its pig-faced orcs. I genuinely don't get this! What desire is being served here---and whose? 1/
