# scripts
okay so japanese uses three scripts: hiragana, katakana, kanji; the former two are alphasyllabaries (one consonant + one vowel sound) and represent something called a "mora" (its like a syllable but not quite, just google it)
hiragana look more "wavy" and are used for native non-kanji words and grammar, and katakana look more "angular" and are mostly used for loanwords or for stylistic reasons.
kanji are characters loaned from chinese and represent meanings rather than strictly words (think of them like emoji)
they often can be pronounced in at least two ways; dont over-focus on kanji, its a lot easier to learn them once you have vocab built up (see later)
if you're just starting out, honestly you can just ignore those latter two scripts and focus on getting at least hiragana down half-okay.
there's 46 symbols in it plus some marks that certain characters have (either a " to turn voiceless consonants voiced like ha/ba or a circle to turn things into P sounds)
im sure anki works great for memorizing it and there's dedicated sites for testing your memorization of hiragana such as https://type-kana.himawari.fun/setup .
there's also a DS game called Kaite Oboeru Doragana which is how i learned the kana, but its very slow (2 kana a day) and probably not as good as what you can find online
