Matt Calkins used to cover the Blazers and I considered him a thoughtful guy. But this heel turn to Outkick culture war sh*t-stirrer is so disappointing. Targeting a women’s sports bar for harassment is a sucky thing to do & the column oozed misogyny. ( & Outkick clearly has no editors. Yikes!)
I tried here to explain why anti-trans activists are targeting Portland, the struggle I have with covering some of these issues as a reporter and how transgender athletes belong in sports. Exclusion is incompatible with equity.

When I was a young sports reporter, a person with an MLB team made disparaging comments toward me. The great Pedro Gomez stood up for me and forced an apology from the team. I think about that moment often these days.
