The Gene Ontology (GO, geneontology.org) knowledgebase is the world’s largest source of information on gene function. Our mission is to develop a comprehensive, computational model of biological systems, ranging from the molecular to organism level.

We identified many differentially expressed genes and found differences in gene ontology processes between groups. Genes involved in cell cycle regulation were enriched in miniature taxa, while genes associated with growth factors and tissue development were enriched in large-bodied gobies.

Gene functional profiles differ between large and miniature gobies. Dot plots of the top 10 enriched Gene Ontology (GO) terms and flow diagrams illustrating the genes involved in A) biological process in miniature species, B) molecular functions in miniature species, C) biological processes in large-bodied species, and D) molecular functions in large-bodied species. The x-axis displays the gene ratio (the proportion of input genes annotated to each term). Dot size represents the number of genes associated with each GO term, and dot color reflects the adjusted p-values. Categories unique to miniature or large-bodied species highlight differences in gene expression related to growth, development, and cell cycle regulation.
