What does the wind sound like? Not much, on its own. To record it properly you need to find an object that the wind can blow by/through, ideally making interesting and evocative sounds. Cacti, big rocks, dried vegetation create a myriad of tiny sound worlds. Atacama Desert, 2022. #fieldrecording

I walked for 10 minutes and I was still under this massive Banyan tree. Taking a photo of the chaotic assortment of trunks, roots, branches and tendrils was not easy. Listen to it: youtu.be/AE3GE9r5D0E?...

If at first I set up my rig on the edge of the caldera, it quickly became clear that the toxic gases and smoke were not very beneficial for my squishy human body. I quickly relocated everything a bit further away, while still being able to capture the incredibly loud explosions of Mount Yasur.

#fieldrecording the sounds of the Namib desert with a hacked together 3D rig: Sound Devices Mixpre 10T, eight DPA 6060 with AIR1 windshields and a massive Bubblebee fur wind jacket to complete the rig. It survived two nights out in a sandstorm and allowed me to capture lovely desert soundscapes.
In January 2026 I went to Romania on a Winter Sound Recording Expedition with @georgevlad, joined by Sten Kloot & Pete Smith. This is a glimpse of what our hikes where lik, to #droprig recording rigs. The #sounds I recorded will be in a later video, so this is just a teaser :) youtu.be/mS3ajkUsW3c

While this was mostly a one-person-band sort of show, it couldn't have happened without the excellent sounds of @georgevlad.bsky.social and @trexbeverly.bsky.social, the animal Foley assistance of Tom Rees, and the sage sonic advice of Ryan Cota and @hazelhaus.bsky.social.
An hour of nature soundscape (free from anthropogenic noise) might take me a few weeks of work, between research, organising and leading an expedition, fieldwork, listening back in the studio, editing, mastering and writing a little story about it. #fieldrecording
Last year I had to track down and record the largest eagle on our planet, the Steller's sea eagle. It wasn't an easy task, made more complicated by blizzards, whiteouts, biting cold and sudden road closures, but I managed to capture a good selection of calls: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEP_...

A very lazy Sunday with Myrtl. I think she knows I’m leaving soon and she wants to spend as much time as possible with me today.
We spent a whole day tracking lions and when we found them, we decided to stick around so we could record their calls. Somehow we picked the laziest ones around, because they slept a lot, yawned and stretched but did not make one sound until nightfall. When they finally did roar, it was magnificent
