"There has to be a better way. There has to be better notification" - Siobhain McDonagh MP From 1st of September, councils will have to tell schools, GPs & health visiting teams when a child is placed in temporary accommodation, improving outcomes for families and children experiencing homelessness
From the 1st of September, councils will have to tell schools, GPs and health visiting teams when a child is placed in temporary accommodation. This new statutory duty is an important step towards better support and outcomes for families and children experiencing homelessness.
Great news: The Temporary Accommodation Notification Duty becomes law on the 1st September! The APPG has continuously campaigned for this duty, which will improve the health and education outcomes for children experiencing homelessness, as well as coordination between services.
NEW HOMELESSNESS DATA from @mhclg on the number of homeless children and households in Temporary Accommodation. January - March 2026: 177,530 children and 135,580 households.
Temporary accommodation can be deeply unsafe for neurodivergent kids, impacting their health and education. BBC News highlights the lived experience of families with neurodivergent kids in TA and our report, "It's like torture", by @rosalie-warnock.bsky.social and @kbrickell.bsky.social.
"Parents have spoken to our APPG about how their living conditions are “like torture”. We must go further to help them." Our APPG member @margaretmullanemp.bsky.social comments on the impact of temporary accommodation on children living with neurodiversity:
CAMPAIGN WIN The Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act has finally received Royal Assent in Parliament. Thank you to our Chair Dame Siobhain McDonagh MP for continuously campaigning for a Duty to Notify, and to colleagues for supporting this amendment.

New data from @ncmd.bsky.social reveals that 104 children have died with temporary accommodation indicated as a contributing factor to their vulnerability, ill health, or death between 2019-2025. 76 were under the age of 1. "We should all be outraged by these figures." - Dame Siobhain McDonagh MP
Horrendous - but neccessary - understanding of the impact bad temporary accomodation can have on our children. Linked to the deaths of 104 children over the past 6 years, 76 of them babies. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
We thank our APPG member @paulabarkermp.bsky.social, who also co-chairs the APPG for Ending Homelessness, for tabling this important debate. We are shocked at the revelation of children being forced to sleep rough and welcome the Minister's proactive response @allymcgovern.bsky.social
Yesterday, @drrosena.bsky.social raised a question at PMQs about the suitability of temporary accommodation and the impact on children's health and mortality. All children deserve to grow up in a safe and secure home, and temporary accommodation standards should be regulated.
We met with the Minister for Homelessness @allymcgovern.bsky.social at the APPG on Ending Homelessness to discuss the National Plan to End Homelessness. We will continue to work with the Government to action the Strategy's bold targets, such as eliminating the use of B&Bs for families and children.
"Temporary Accommodation should never result in permanent harm. And let this report be the moment we commit to ensuring it no longer does." "It's like torture" by @kbrickell.bsky.social & @rosalie-warnock.bsky.social The parliamentary launch of the report is available at youtu.be/LfE6BpG-NY0
NEW HOMELESSNESS DATA from MHCLG on the number of homeless children and households in Temporary Accommodation. July - September 2025: 175,990 children and 134,760 households.
The parliamentary launch of the report 'It's like torture' by @kbrickell.bsky.social & @rosalie-warnock.bsky.social was a great success. Lived experience is an essential part of driving the work of the APPG. We're grateful to the families and children who presented on Monday.
